stuartbish
Why is retrospect copying entire directories of my raw camera files (160 GB worth and more) multiple times? The files haven't been changed or even opened, but my backup hard drives are getting filled up with multiple versions of the same files. The files are located on a Drobo. My startup drive failed recently (one drive of RAID 1 array) and I decided to install fresh OS and use migration assistant to migrate all applications and data from other RAID startup drive. Is it a permissions issue? When the permissions are changed on a volume/directory/file does retrospect see it as a totally different file? This is alarming if you have 2 TB of camera files on a drive. I'm running OSX 10.5.8; retrospect 8.2.0 (399). Going broke buying hard drives! Thanks for any help!!! Here are a few thoughts: I've noticed that Migration Assistant doesn't necessarily pass the identical creation/modification dates from the source volume to the destination; this would cause the files to be backed up a second time. If the volume formats are not identical, this could make the files appear to be slightly different in size, again causing a second backup. If you have the option "Match only files in same location/path" selected in your script, this will definitely force them to be backed up again anytime they are copied or moved. Finally, if you don't need to have Access Control Lists or other extended file attributes taken into consideration in your backups, you should uncheck the script option "Use attribute modification date when matching" to avoid unnecessary multiple copies. (I believe that changing just POSIX permissions shouldn't cause the files to be backed up again.)
stuartbish
Many thanks! I think your last hunch is the one that's causing me the grief (attribute modification date when matching). I have turned that off and will see what happens on the next directory. It's been running for over 18 hours so far and the biggest directory is yet to come... Financial Tip: buy stock in companies that make hard drives!
