MacWright
When 6.1 become non-SL happy, I converted all my backups to HardDrives and CCC and it works great. I thought that I had pulled all of my data from the AIT library that I needed but yesterday I needed to grab something from the AITs. My plan at the time was to keep a bootable 10.5.8 drive and keep the ATTO UL5D LP / AIT externals connected. This worked fine, I rebooted grabbed the files that I needed and restarted from the new 10.6.7 boot drive. So... I've forgotten what the method/problems are to move from 6.1 > 8x. Would I need to convert all of the tapes... does that require 8x to read through all of the tapes? if that is the case I might be better off with the current setup since I won't need to write any new tapes. What do you? stick with the old boot drive for emergency retrieval or is there a simply way to migrate to 8x and use the current OS? thanks. j ps sorry about the typo in the title : ) Edited June 2, 2011 by J_ph

The 6.1 backup set doesn't need conversion, but you would need to create a v8 catalog from the 6.1 tapes, which would require reading them all. Due to the hassle, we have opted not to go that route, and keep an old G5 around to run Retro 6.1, should that prove necessary. We've actually found, however, that we can successfully restore document files running 6.1 under Snow Leopard, so we haven't yet needed the old machine. (I wouldn't try this with any system files or applications.) For occasional restores, I would think your dual-boot solution would be less of a hassle than rebuilding a v8 catalog, and you too may find you can even restore Retro 6.1 files while running under 10.6. MacWright
Hi Tim Thanks for the reply, I apologize for the late response I didn't get an email notification. I might have to try your SL trick and see if it works for us. It's too bad about the hurdle going from 6.1>8 ..... it's only a couple files that I may have skipped in our transfer that I may need to access via Retrospect. best regards J

If you find that 6.1 does not function on your setup and if you have a good idea on which tape member(s) contains your desired files, you could rebuild the catalog for just those members, which would save a bit of time. Start your rebuild with the first-numbered likely tape member. If you're rebuilding from multiple members that are not sequential, just tell Retrospect that the intervening members are lost.
