Error Message -1103

Recommended Posts

I have been using Retrospect Pro 7.6 for several years without a single problem. About 2 weeks ago I started getting random -1103 error messages. Sometimes it says it can't create the backup set and other times it says it can't create a catalog. This doesn't happen every time but is starting to occur now almost all the time. I rotate 5 external usb hard drives. It is a single computer not on a network. Oddly, the backup sets and catalogs do appear as backeup up and when I do a test restore on the backup choosing several files to restore the catalog seems to be correct. Aslo, the backup set on my external drive looks like it contains normal file saves. I tried to add screen captures of the 2 error messages but get a message that the file is too big--only 4 b file size is permitted. Please advise how I can correct ther -1103 error messages.

I would perform a catalog rebuild, the current catalog might be corrupted.

This is happening with all catalogs--8 of them. I just moved all catalogs to a new folder and did as you have said to others--double click on one to have it recognized by Retrospect. I couldn't select them all and double click on one since double clicking on one deselects all the others. Neverthe less the one catalog opened Retrospect and I tried to do a backup. However when I got the Executing window it said Not In Use. When I checked the history I saw the same error message-- Catalog locked.

I failed to tell you I am using Windows 7, and have been for close to a year, and Retrospect 7.6 has performed flawlessly up until a couple of weeks ago. I emailed your tech support folks and got this message back:

Retrospect 7.6 isn't compatible with Windows 7. In order to use Retrospect with Windows 7 you will have to upgrade to version 7.7 which is the only version of the application that is compatible with your operating system. .

That's very strange since 7.6 has been working all this time perfectly.

Any further suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks.

Hank

One more very important thing. I just went to the Roxio website to check Retrospect 7.6 with Windows 7. Here is what is said:

Retrospect 7.6 and earlier does not support Windows 7.

Retrospect 7.6 and earlier is not able to successfully back up and restore an entire Windows 7 OS locally or as a client. Retrospect 8 for Mac is also not able to successfully back up and restore an entire Windows 7 client. Individual data files backed up with Retrospect can be restored. However, restoring an entire Windows 7 computer with Retrospect will leave the computer in a non-bootable state.

Note that it specifcally refers to Retrospect 7.6 being able to backup and restore in Windows 7. What 7.6 can't do--and which I have never done, nor will need to be done--is to backup the entire Windows 7 OS. So 7.6 is compatible with my usage of it in Windows 7.

There must be some solution to my problem. Please help me with this. I have hundreds of backups/snapshots. I have 160,000 files. I run a business with many of these files. Your help is very important to me.

Again, thank you.

  • 3 months later...

I am having the same error with Retrospect 7.6, on Windows 7. Retrospect 7.6 has been operating successfully on Win 7 since its Oct 2009 release. And, as quoted above, as long as I don't try to backup an entire Win7 OS image, only individual files, it should work.

In addition to the write protect error, I am also now getting an assertion error. It sends a detailed report to "Retrospect", but I don't know if it gets to Roxio or not. Here is a tidbit of this error log:

"OS: Windows Vista version 6.1 (build 7601), Service Pack 1, (64 bit)

Application: C:\Program Files (x86)\Retrospect\Retrospect 7.6\retrospect.exe, version 7.6.123

Driver Update and Hot Fix version 7.6.2.101

Exception occurred on 7/31/2011 at 1:31:51 AM

Error info: Assertion failure at "elem.cpp-993"

Exception code: e0000000 ASSERTION"

Does anyone have a clue how to proceed? Is there a clean way to re-initialize my Retrospect installation?

Thanks,

Alan
