Disk-Disk-Tape (D2D2T) backup strategy: please verify

Recommended Posts

I have a Raid 5 drive for D2D, and a Qualstar tape drive for D2T. I want to backup a network of Windows XP machines, a few linux machines, a couple Solaris machines, and a couple laptops. My thought was that I would setup scripts to perform progressive backups of all machines every night, then over the weekend (possibly every other weekend) backup the Raid drive to tape for total disaster recovery purposes and perform a full backup if necessary. My question is whether I should perform an archive, duplicate backup set, or snapshot transfer to back up the Raid drive to tape and in what cases would one be used over the others?

Does this appear to be a sound backup strategy?

Thanks in advance for any insight!
