crayford
Having just evaluated version 7 and subsequently bought a Small Business Server Standard version, I now find that Open File backup is NOT included in this version. I would have thought that by definition it shoudl cover all aspects of the Small Business Server and that would include the ability to fully backup up the system in the event of a Disaster. After all, Disaster Recovery IS included. From having perfect backups to suddenly overnight getting 800+ errors, all due to open files does not make me happy. I'm not prepared to go and spend more than the price of the Original software on the Open File Add-on. If I go around and exclude the open files, I feel that I am moving away from the ideal of a quick restore of the system in the event of a total disaster. Have anyone got any words of comfort or guidance. Regards Roger Maynard UK
natew
Hi 800 errors is an awful lot. What program has that many files open? Any chance you can close those programs during the backup? Are the errors happening in the "copy" phase of the backup or in the "compare" phase? If you have no errors in the copy phase you can assume that all files were copied to the backup media in one form or another. Thanks Nate
crayford
Hi Nate - about 50-50 between copy and compare phase. There were a lot in the C:\System Volume Information folder which relate to the System Restore Points as well as the C:\Windows\Temp folder. I have tried to Exclude both of these from the backups but for some reason the exclusion simply doesn't work. On the face of it to build an exclusion is such a simple exercise, I cannot understand why it doesn't work. Back to the drawing board, I think. I have closed a lot of services via a batch file and re-start at the end of the backup which has reduced the error count to 80 odd. I will keep trying to eliminate these. I am beginning to think that the Volume Shadow Copy function which comes as standard with Small Business Server will offer almost as much as Retrospect. Any comments would be gratefully received. natew
Hi When you exclude files from backup they do not get copied. However the locations of all files on disk are noted when the volume snapshot is created. I suspect that is where you are seeing the errors. There should be an error code associated with each error. Can you tell me what error codes you are seeing? Thanks Nate

natew
Hi This may not be pretty but I think it will work: Can you manually disable the Windows Volume Shadow Copy Service and then run a backup? That should unlock the files so they no longer produce errors. If that works we can figure out an external backup script that will stop the service while your backup is running and restart it afterward. Thanks Nate
