Guest
Hi. I'm new to Retrospect (7.0, Multi Server), and have a question about doing restores...if I want to restore a complete file set, what is the best procedure for doing so? I've got 3 rotating backup sets (A, B, and C) running on three different firewire drives. In doing a folder restore, do I need to take all the sets and snapshots therein into account when trying to do a full restore? I've been trying to restore several folders, and it seems that things are missing after I've restored from the most recent backup set. I moved to Retrospect from Veritas...primarily because of the ease of multi server backup...restores don't seem to be as simple or intuitive though Thanks in advance for any help you can provide...I appreciate your support of a newbie magier
natew
Hi I suspect you are doing a search by folder name to find the files for restore? That will work but may give you more files than you want. It isn't all that easy either. Each backup set contains a full backup of the folders in question. The best way to do your restore is to restore from the most recent snapshot. That will restore all the selected files or folders to the state they were in when you ran the backup. If files are missing it means they were either excluded from backup by a selector or were not on disk at the time of backup. Try restoring an earlier snapshot or from another backup set. Guest
Hi Nate. Thanks for the speedy reply! So...if I restore a folder that doesn't still exist in the target drive from the most recent snapshot, that will install everything that was in that folder? (not just changed files from that particular point in time?)... Thanks again for your help...I very much appreciate it! magier
natew
Hi I see where you are getting mixed up now. Retrospect uses progressive backup. So the user doesn't have to differentiate between full and incremental backup. Retrospect handles that automatically. Every time you run a backup Retrospect takes a snapshot (image) of which files/folders were on a disk and where they were located. It doesn't matter if those files were backed up in a full backup or an incremental backup. Retrospect simply takes a picture of the disk at that point in time. If you restore a disk or a folder using a snapshot, Retrospect will restore whatever was in the folder at the time the snapshot was created. Make sense? Guest
Hi Nate. Yeah, it makes sense - it's basically how I thought that it was supposed to work. However, it's not what is happening. For instance: Say that I've created a new backup set on Jan 1. It runs backups for a week (through Jan 6). Theoretically, I should be able to restore the snapshot from Jan 6 and get a complete restore of everything that was on the disk (with changes for the week) through the 6th. What I'm getting, though, is partial restorations. Not everything comes back and I end up searching for missing files. It's pretty messy and I'm not particularly happy with the results I'm getting. I had a server fail and thought, "OK, I'll just run a restore to last night, so no huge problem there"...unfortunately, the restore isn't complete - I still find "missing" files within the same backup set from different snapshots... Are there any supplementary manuals that you can suggest for this software? I've invested a big chunk of $$ here and am not getting very good results so far. I keep thinking that I'm missing something... Thanks! Magier
natew
Hi What do you mean by "with changes"? Are you trying to restore every version of every file that changed over the week? If so, do a search for files restore and leave the search criteria blank. This will restore everything in a backup set. Snapshots restore a disk to the exact state it was in on the date/time of the snapshot. If you restore a snapshot from Jan 6 you will only restore the files that were on disk on Jan 6. My aplogies in advance if this is redundant. Thanks Nate
