freshairphoto
I have done a complete hard drive backup to dvd, with the intention of burning a disaster recovery cd afterword. I have basically 2 problems I'm hoping someone can help me with. Both problems stem from the fact that I cannot find my original Windows XP upgrade cd...My PC originally came with Windows ME. Because I have lost the cd, I cannot burn the disaster recovery cd because it requires the "txtstartup.sif" file which I believe is on the missing Windows XP upgrade cd. That's my first problem. The 2nd problem is that it looks as though I would need my Windows Xp upgrade cd plus my original Windows ME cd or recovery discs to reinstall my system if I happen to experience a system crash. Any information that might help me would be greatly appreciated.

I've been monitoring this board for quite a while now and I've yet to see someone having success in creating a disaster recovery CD, especially now with SP2. I would seem that Dantz hasn't been able to integrate SP2 into the needed software to create the CD. As for your second problem, if you don't have the disks needed to reinstall your OS, you will not be able to access your Retrospect Backup. If I were you I would look for an imaging software that will let you create a disaster recovery disk. natew
Hi The problem here is FreshairPhoto does not have the Windows XP CD. Disaster recovery CDs can't be created without the OS install CD. XP SP2 disaster recovery works just fine as long as you have a windows install CD that includes SP2. That is what causes trouble for most people. Thanks Nate

mgkeefer
Hi. New Retrospect Express 6.5 user here. Software came with my IOGear 320GB drive. I have an XP Pavilion Notebook which I upgraded to SP2 some time ago. I don't have an OS CDROM with SP2, just the original that came with the System. After making my first back up of my entire C: drive, I tried to create the DR CD, but the OS disk (SP1) was not recognized by the system...even under My Computer. It acted like the drive was empty. The point at which I was in the CD creation process was browsing to the i386 folder looking for an INF file (if memory serves). Since I couldn't open the OS disk in the CD/DVD drive, I searched for the directory and file on the C: drive and found "i386" in the root of C:. In Retrospect, I switched to that directory on my hard drive, selected the file it was looking for and everything seemed to complete OK. My assumption was I could use the file(s) on my hard drive versus going after the one(s) on the XP SP1 disk that came with the system. Now I wonder if what I've done will legitimately work in a DR situation. Can anyone tell me if I need to recreate the DR CD a different way than this to be able to use it to recover from an complete hard drive failure (starting over with a new empty hard drive)? Thanks! natew
Hi If you have a system recovery CD from the manufacturer you don't need a DR CD. In the event of DR: Restore the system using the manufacturer CD Update to XP SP2 Install Retrospect and restore. Thanks nate
