Intermittent problems with Workgroup version 6 & 10.3.x

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I tried using Retrospect a while back but stopped using it because of intermittent errors. I have decided to give it a go again but I am rolling it out slowly this time (as apposed to a full scale roll out the last time) and am into my three week. I am experiencing such problems again. I am getting an error reporting that one of the computers could not be seen on the network (error -1028). I have just checked its Energy saver & its set to start up the mac at 0:00 & shutdown: 3:00. This mac is set to go as far the login widow. I can confirm this Mac backed up on/off no problem over the last 3 week period. I have another 3 macs backing up also at the same time but non of them reported any problems last night. I have not had a single night except when I started out with two macs without at least one of the macs reporting this error. The other three are automatically set to login to user accounts. Is there a limit to the number of macs that can be backed up at one time, etc? Any help would be appreciated.

I'm sorry I'm not an expert with retrospect yet. But I can tell you I back up 5 macs and 3 pc's on a regular basis. I do get occasional error messages. But I know I have done many successfull automatic backups. The 1028 error message has to do with memory. I am having that problem now also. Search the list of errors and the forums for more info on error-1028.

if your computers are on dhcp, make sure you added the client via the browsing method as opposed to adding by IP address. also, do away with the energy saver on/off scheduling and leave the systems on all the time.

basically, what is happening is retrospect does not see the client systems. either of the above conditions may contribute to this issue.

btw, i've never heard of error -1028 being related to memory. the error is one where the retrospect server does not see the client. if i turn off a client system, -1028 will most certainly occur.

I have also been having the same problem after having reinstalled Retrospect and using the newest updates. And on top of that the automtic scripts do not run - you have to start them manually. Additionally, if you start the backup manually - which you have to - the computer does not shut down when finished. I have removed, reinstalled, rewritten the scripts, etc. Nothing seems to fix the problem. V4.3 had been working perfectly. Unless I can find a workaround, I guess I will have to go back to 4.3 [Running Tiger 10.4.2 on three G5s each with 1 gig of ram - backing up to a LaCie 250 GB external firewire drive with plenty of room] Energy saver is turned off although I have seen nothing in the manual or help documents stating that energy saver can not be on.

Hi,

You are running Retrospect 6.1 right? That is the latest version. Are you getting error 1028 when connecting to clients? Is port 497 open on the firewall for all your machines? If not you will not be able to connect to clients.

page 221 of the manual talks about not setting clients to sleep.

Thanks

Nate
