tonysab
Hi, I am using Retrospect Express 6.0, and have recently bought a new PC. My old PC was running Windows ME and I had all my backup sets stored fine. Moving to the new PC I moved my Maxtor HDD and installed Retrospect again, no probs doing new backups from the new PC, but is there any way I can view (and restore) the backups that are still on the drive (I can see them in Windows Explorer), via Retrospect? Thanks in advance for any help.
dld
Not according to my manual. Note that you must install the same version of the operating system that you were using originally before restoring your system.
tonysab
Thanks for the reply, although I think that refers to performing a complete System backup. I am just running an incremental type script. I can't believe that I cannot restore across OS versions, after all a memory stick can do it, I am using a Maxtor one-touch. tonysab
Can anyone confirm this, I can't believe that I cannot do this. In summary I have files on my Maxtor HDD using Retrospect 6 that were put on there from a Windows ME system. I now want to copy them onto a Windows XP machine, but I don't seem to be able to do this? THanks.
natew
Hi You can restore files and folders on any windows OS or disk. You can restore program settings but you will need to move them to thier corresponding locations in XP. You cannot restore the OS or applications. Thanks Nate
tonysab
Thanks, so how do I restore files and folders? I cannot see any backup sets when I am on XP, but I can if I am on ME. They are physically there though as I can see them in Windows Explorer.
natew
Hi Have you rebuilt the backup catalog file on your XP machine? You can do that on the tools->repair menu in Retrospect. Thanks Nate
tonysab
Thanks. No I have not done that, is that something I would need to do as a matter of course, I mean, I'm only trying to effictively 'copy' a whole load of stuff from my old pc to my new one. natew
Hi You need a catalog file to do anything with the backup data. Once you have it rebuilt you will be able to restore files. Thanks Nate
tonysab
Sorry if I am appearing dumb but is this just because I am trying to access it on 2 machines, it all works fine on the ME machine. I can see the backup sets no problem. I can also see them on the XP machine but only within Windows Explorer, not from within Retrospect. If so how do I do this rebuild, if its in the manual just say so and I'll dig it out. Thanks again.
natew
Hi It works on ME because the catalog files are stored on the C drive of the ME computer. It doesn't work on XP because there are no catalog files on the C drive of the XP computer. To rebuild catalogs go to the tools->repair menu in Retrospect. Thanks nate
tonysab
Many thanks Nate. I have tried this, I did restore from disk and specified the location. All seemed to be going well except after about 10 minutes its just sat there with the timer going round, coincidentally it has built exactly 5.0gb so far.......I've now had to click Stop but it just kept going until I cancelled it from Task Manager.
