backup hanging when building snapshots

Recommended Posts

This is Retrospect multiserver 7.0.301 with driver 7.5.102. It happens occasionally that the "building snapshot" at the progress bar stays forever with 0 progress - not moving after 12 hours. At this point it is also not possible to stop backup. Ending the application from the task manager appears the only way out. It seems more likely to happen with computers that have a lot of files. Perhaps some internal resource problem. Sometimes it also seems that the application is crashing showing a "unexpected ... or power failure" error. Any idea how to fix this?

Best regards,

Markus

Hello,

thanks for your reply. I'm not sure if I understand your first question. There is only one execution queue. The tape device is a IBM Ultrium 3584 (bigger 3580), fiber. Ram in the computer is 512 MB. The OS is Windows 2k server with latest patches. One thing that chanced recently is that we've implemented Open File backup license. Retrospect is crashing almost every day now, usually about 7 AM, but I guess the log is not updated at that time. When I had these problems in the past I created a new backup, but it did not fix the problem. It seems happening when building the snapshot as described above.

Hi

How much free space is available on the system disk?

Do you have any other programs that monitor open files on your computer?

How many files are on the disk?

I'm not sure why this is happening but one posibility is low ram or disk space. Open file backups and snapshots use a lot of both of those items.

Thanks

Nate

The system disk has 2.6 GB and the disk for the storageset 2.8 GB available. There are no other open file utilities or other 3rd party products installed beside Trend Antivirus. The server is backing up a windows fileserver for moaning profile users, plus a dozen other individual users. Retorspect was hanging again last night when building the snapshot of the fileserver.

Hi

Snapshot creation requires a lot of memory and swap space. The number (not size) of files and folders makes a big difference. The creater number of files the more memory required to build the snapshot.

Can you free up any space on either of these disks?

Thanks

nate
