"Disk Full" - but it's not!

I back up to an external HD that has 55 GB capacity. I have files totaling 26 GB and I have two folders into which I perform a "duplicate" on alternate days. About once a week I get a "Disk Full" error in Retrospect Express. The size of the folders individually equal the files I'm backing up ... but the properties of the disk itself show it to be full. I can't figure out where the phantom files are that consume the rest of the HD. (Yes, I have "display hidden files" checked in Windows Explorer.)

Ideas?

I must be missing something or else my math is not good. But if you have two folders into which you are duplicating 26 GB of data without compression, doesn't that add up to a total of 56 GB right there, exceeding the capacity of your HD?
