Plextor PX-716A & Restrospect 6.5

Guest

Recommended Posts

Using Time Limited edition of Retrospect version 6.5.319 that came with my new Plextor PX-716A (ATPI). I can B/U using CD-R but NOT with several diffferent, right out of the box DVD+R and DVD+R DL. Below log shows results. Reinstalled latest PX-716A firmware, reinstalled Retrospect version 6.5.319 but still can't get Retrospect to work with any type DVD. PX-716A reads DVDs like a champ. Note that Plextor PX-716A not included on Dantz list of "tested" devices.

Did Plextor bundled the wrong Dantz software with their drive OR am I missing something here? Can anyone give me some advise other than give up on Retrospect?

Hi

You are correct that the 716A is not on the list of supported devices. I suspect Plextor included Retrospect by accident.

In any case I would try updating to the latest version of Retrospect 6.5 and the latest driver update from the EMC Dantz updates page:

http://www.dantz.com/en/support/updates.dtml

That may help with the configuration.

Thanks

Nate

Continuation of Basic Post:

I've loaded Roxio Easy Creator 7 Basic DVD that also came bundled with my new Plextor PX-716A drive and was able to burn 6.5Gb of files to the single remaining DVD+R DL disk I owned that wasn't destroyed (closed to a read only condition) by my errant encounter with Retospect 6.5.

I don't know who to be more bad at, Plextor for bundling software that doesn't work with a new drive they're shipping, Dantz for producing software that screws-up blank disks without warning or ME for investing two new DVD+R DL disks plus one DVD+R that came with the drive. I'll count it up to a $13 learning experience that taught me to pitch the Retrospect backup software. Its coming off this PC tonight!

E-Mail Thread w Plextor,

No doubt, it could have been cock-pit error, but even it were, the software has to take some responsibility. As far as sotware conflicts. I doubt it since since the Roxio Easy Media Creator 7, Basic DVD works just fine.

The tech lab tests all software and would not bundle unless it was checked out. Dantz works with us to test product compatibility. We supply drives to them and they supply the 30 day trial version software to us for eval.

This is the first comment I've received on a supposed compatibility issue in the couple of years we've been shipping this software with the drives. As with most issues, there is no detail about what the trouble was, the error codes, where in the program it quit, or whatever. In most cases like this, it is usually customer error or some conflicting software. Regards,

Bob

Subject: Retrospect & PX-716A

Gentlemen,

I’m not a happy camper concerning the software you supplied with my new PX-716A drive.

This weekend, I installed the Retrospect 6.5 back-up software that came bundled with the new drive. I ended up destroying three DVD disks in an unsuccessful attempt to 'Configure' the drive/media using the Retrospect software. I later found out that the PX-716A has not been tested by Dantz, the publishers of the Retrospect software. It appears that the PX-716A is NOT compatible with the Retrospect software you sent me. I figure that Plextor is a party to me losing about $13 of DVDs (one DVD+R and two DVD+R DL). I’ll count it as a distasteful and costly Plextor learning experience.

You need to be more careful before you rush your products to market. Plextor has a quality reputation. Don’t screw it up.

pgMartin,

For my part I'd like to apologize for the trouble this has been. If there were an update to Retrospect that supported this drive I would most certainly get you a copy.

Plextor bundled Retrospect software on the assumption of compatibility. It is true that Retrospect supports most Plextor drives but they still should have checked more closely. I don't know why this one drive is not supported.

Thanks,

Nate

Hi

It appears that the EMC Dantz hardware database listing for this drive is incorrect. My contacts are saying this drive is actually a supported device in Retrospect 6.5.

Please download and install Retrospect 6.5.350 and Retrospect driver update 5.4 from the EMC Dantz updates page. Then try another backup.

You do not need to run autoconfiguration with this drive. Supported drives already have a driver from EMC Dantz.

Please let us know if you continue to have trouble.

Thanks

Nate
