Quantum Valueloader Configuration

Recommended Posts

About a year ago I installed a Quantum Valueloader SDLT 320 tape library, onto a Mac G4/400 512MB RAM, OS 10.3.9, Retrospect Server v. 6.0.193, rdu 6.2.102. I back up about 30 Mac and Windows clients nightly. Since installing the valueloader I have had nothing but trouble. At best, I get a few days of reliable backups. Then the backups begin to fail. Sometimes the scripts stop running, or the computer hangs, or a catalog file gets corrupted, or some other problem. I have contacted all of the applicable tech support people (Dantz, Quantum, ATTO, Apple). At this point I am considering switching to a PC, perhaps with Retrospect - perhaps not.

Does anyone out there use a Valueloader reliably? Could you please send me your configuration? Thanks.

Hi,

I have a 8-slot Quantum ATL ValueLoader w/ LTO2 drive on a G5 512MB OS 10.4 machine running 6.0.212 and have not seen any problems so far.

I have an Atto UL4S w/ firmware 1.4.2f1 and driver 3.4.0.

I'm guessing you have fully updated the Atto card.

It sounds like your tape drive could be bad.

You may also want to try updating to 6.0.204 and RDU 6.5.102.

Hi,

Thanks for your input. It is very helpful. My ATTO card is configured like yours, but I had to decrease the sync rate to 20 or 10 MB/s because the actual bus speed of the G4 is only 66 MB/s. Only the G5 goes up to 133 MB/s which is the transfer rate of the ATTO card. I have long suspected a bus speed mismatch. A G5 would be nice, but a PC is a lot cheaper. I'll try updating to newer version of Retrospect and RDU. I hadn't done it because I recall that the updates are for Tiger, and I'm still on Panther.
