Dmax_Guy
Using Retrospect Multi Server 6.0.206 on Win2K. While performing a backup, the AIT2 drive in my Overland Library Pro bit the dust - or at least I think it did. Every time I would try and write to this tape [93rd in this storage set], I would get a warning to clean the drive - both on the front panel of the machine and in Retrospect. Cleaning the drive with a cleaning tape didn't help - error still occurs. Taking the drive out of the chassis and cleaning it by hand also didn't work - same error occurs. Besides the cleaning errors, I'm getting 'Catalog out of sync' errors, prompting me to repair the catalog. Fine. When repairing the catalog I get several execution errors [error -206 drive reported a failure: dirty heads, bad media, etc]. Whew! Now my question: Should I go ahead and pretend this tape doesn't exist and rebuild the catalog with the previous tape? The most current tape in this set is using only 1.1 GB, and all this files I need to back up are still on the server. Thoughts, opinions and insults are welcome!! Lennart_T
Yikes, 93 tapes!!! How about "New Media Backup" soon? Anyway, setting this last tape to "Missing" seems like a good idea. You might even get away without repairing the catalog. The same problem with a new tape? The your tape drive really hit the dust.

We're a prepess company and these are archived files, not daily backups. Daily backup is handled by our LTO2 Library. Anyone want to chime in here? Should I mark tape 93 as missing and proceed, or should I rebuild the catalog with tape 92?

Well, I would do a new media backup anyway. Isn't the backup set growing very large and unmanageable? A new media backup will keep the old backup set intact. A new catalog file is created with the same name as the old with [001] added at the end. The next time it will be [002] instead. Quote: Anyone want to chime in here?
