kathy72
I have Retrospect Express 5.6 that came with a Buslink external hard drive I purchased - I've been using it a couple of years with Windows ME no problem, then I bought a new computer with Windows XP SP2 and installed the Retrospect and it worked no problem at first, I was even able to restore some data with it onto the new computer. Now a few days later when I try to start it up I get an error: Oxc0000005:The application failed to initialize properly. I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling, system restore, even uninstalling other software that I installed after it thinking it might be interfering but no luck so far... Any ideas? Sam_S
If it makes you feel any better I've had this same problem (as have others). There seems to be some sort of conflict with the Microsoft .Net software. Not sure when it will be fixed, though. I've never gotten this software going on two different machines, both with XP, sp2 on them. Sam
natew
Hi Sam_S You might have better luck with Retrospect Express 6.0. The installer is located in the Network folder on the maxtor CD. Thanks Nate
Sam_S
Tried that. The software hung consistently when trying to do an automated backup.(Waiting while initializing the backup). The backup drive couldn't be re-set except via a cold boot. I've given up on Retrospect for now... too buggy and too complex for just doing simple backups of my home system. The sad thing is that this software could be a good sales vehicle for Dantz, if it worked. I've registered complaints about just installing the HD version since January... no real help or patches to make it work. If, one of these days, Dantz ever decides to support this software, I may try it again. But for now, it's just too frustrating to deal with. natew
Hi If Retrospect 6.0 is also hanging there is something wrong on your machine. How did it hang during automatic backups? I'm pretty sure we can get to the bottom of this. Thanks Nate
Sam_S
I'm not sure what information you need about it hanging when doing an automatic backup. The screen comes up and it looks like it's starting... but then nothing happens and it's stuck. You can't get out of it.. even using Task Manager. By the way, I tried the trial version of Retrospect 7.0 and it worked perfectly. The problem is that I don't think I should have to pay an extra $49 for 7.0, just to make the software that I already have work. Sam
natew
Hi To clarify: The hang you described happens with Retrospect Express HD and Retrospect 6.0? They are very different programs so its very strange they would both fail in the same way. Thanks Nate
Sam_S
That hang was with Express 6.0 (the one that comes with the Maxtor external drive). I can't get HD to install at all... I get a "RetroExpress.exe, Application has generated an exception that could not be handled" error. As I said, the trial version of 7.0 worked perfectly. So they've fixed something.
