BruceRead
Just bought an external hard drive that came with Retrospect Express 6.5. Have never used backup software before, and was exploring the Dantz site after installing the software. I see I can upgrade to the Professional 7.0 for about $50. What are the additional features you get in that software? I'm using this on a home desktop. Bruce

It is rarely advantageous to buy directly from a manufacturer.
BruceRead
Thanks, Howard. What I'm really interested in understanding is the extra features or other differences between Express 6.5 and Professional 7.0. Bruce
JEtkins
Never having had the Express version, I can't comment on what the Pro version offers over Express, but you will find a list of the enhancements from 6.5 Pro to 7.0 Pro on Dantz's Retrospect product pages. One of the biggest selling points of 7.0 over 6.5, for me, was the new automatic grooming functionality for disk backup sets. Given that you're presumably going to be backing up to that external disk that the software came with, you should take a look at grooming, too. It drastically reduces, if not completely removes, the need to recycle your disk backup sets ever again, as Retrospect will automatically drop the oldest backups from the set to make room for new ones. I wasn't going to upgrade to 7.0. But the "automatic grooming" feature sounds interesting. Worth looking into..

Dropping old backups is a disadvantage if it prevents retrieving older versions of particular files.

Bruce The only one that was interesting to me was the 'grooming' feature. If you use a Disk backup, Retrospect will automatically [or you can do some configuring of the logic used] 'groom' older files so the size of disk backup set stays within the size limit you set.
