bbowler
Hi, I just got a new PC with XPproSP2 on it. My old machine had 98SE. On the old machine I had Retrospect Professional, 6.0.206. I followed the instructions to move all of the selectors, backup sets, etc from the old machine to the new machine and all that seemed to work. The problem is that the new machine doesn't seem to be able to read the backup CDs written on the old machine. Old machine had an HP CDwriter+ 8200 drive, the new machine has an _NEC DVD+-RW ND-3450A that retrospect was able to certify. When I start up retrospect, and select run>>mybackup, it does it's thing figuring out what files to backup, then it says insert CD labeled 7-bruce, which I do and it says something along the lines of "unrecognized content". The drive itself appears to be fine as I can read/write to it from other applications. Any advice would be appreciated (upgrading may not be an option, so solutions that work with 6.0 are best) Thanks! Bruce
natew
Hi Chances are the old drive supported packet writing with Retrospect and the new one does not. The new drive is likely using track at once. Unfortunately that means the media you wrote on the old drive can't be appended to on the new drive. You will have to start a new backup set for the new machine. Thanks Nate
bbowler
OK, but I can't READ the old backups (or at least retrospect can't read them) in the new drive either. That leads me to conclude I have 3 options, none of which are particularly desirable a) keep the old machine around in order to restore data from the old backups chuck the old backups along with the machine c) toss the new drive and install the old drive a) wont work as I don't have the room yeah, right - what's the point of backups if you can't restore them c) which means giving up the ability to write DVDs
bbowler
So, is there a way that I can get retrospect to READ the old backups on the new drive?
bbowler
I'll take the lack of an answer as "No, there's no way in &*(^(^*& that retrospect is going to be able to read the old backups on the new drive" I guess it's time to find a new backup package... JEtkins
Quote: a) keep the old machine around in order to restore data from the old backups chuck the old backups along with the machine c) toss the new drive and install the old drive I don't have an answer to why the drives are incompatible, but I thought I'd point out that you omitted option (d): purchase an external USB enclosure for the old drive
natew
Hi Unfortunately if the drives use different write methods you will not be able to read the discs on the new drive. As another poster suggested a USB enclosure for the drive may be a good way to go. Thanks Nate
