tonysab
Hi, I have just purchased a Maxtor One Touch and installed Retrospect 6.0.222 which came with it. I am attempting to take regular progressive backups of my "My Documents" folder. In simplistic terms I would like to back it up now, and then on an ad-hoc basis take a backup of new and changed files. First things first, pressing the button on the Maxtor does not do anything, it is currently set to - C:\PROGRA~1\DANTZ\RETROS~1\Retrospect.exe C:\PROGRA~1\DANTZ\RETROS~1\MaxtorOneTouch.rxt and within Retrospect I have a Maxtor One Touch script in existence. No big deal it's not the end of the world, although a bit of a shame. Has anyone any ideas why the button is not doing anything? More importantly though, I just cannot get my head around the best way of doing what I want. I tried to create a new Backup set - stupid question, where do I specify that the destination is my new USB External drive??? The only reference I can find where I could specify this is where you specify you want the catalog file saved - although the help text says this should reside on the local hard disk! I have tried changing this to point to my new drive and it does seem to work ok, but is this correct. Also my "My Documents" folder is approx 9gb in size, will I be able to make an initial backup of this as I am running Windows ME and I have read about the 4gb file limit. I would like to take progressive backups which I understand may therefore cause a problem due to the initial file size? I would be grateful for any advice on these points, at the moment I have just copied the "My Documents" folder directly onto the new drive without using Retrospect - fine for the initial backup but a bit messy for the new/updated backups to come.... Many thanks in advance.

I would suggest you backup your system manually at first, until you get to know what you are doing. When you click on Backup, you will be asked for the Source as well as the Destination. For Destination, click New. You will be asked for Storage Type. Click on Disk. If your USB2 Maxtor is connected and turned on, you should be able to see your partition on the Maxtor. I don't know much about the size limitations on FAT32, so someone else will have to help you on this. I found this on a forum: The original release of Windows 95 and versions of Windows and MS-DOS released before it used a FAT16 partition table which allowed up to a 2 Gig partition. While larger hard disk drives could be used it required that you broke the hard drive up to multiple sections. The second release of Windows 95 or OSR2 and later versions of Windows enabled a new fat referred to as FAT32. This fat table supported drives upward of 32 Gig. In order to see more then 2 Gigs you need to either have Windows 95 OSR2, Windows 98 or Windows 2000 to determine the version of your operating system see our Windows version page. If you have an operating system that supports FAT32 to enable FAT32 support you must delete and recreate the partitions using Fdisk and when recreating the partitions enable Large Disk support. If however you have Windows 98 you can convert the hard disk drive to FAT32 support by clicking on Start / Programs / Accessories / System Tools / and click on Drive Converter (FAT32). It is important to know however if you convert the hard disk drive to FAT32 it will only convert the 2gig partition and not enable the hard disk drive to see over 2GIG. In order to see the complete hard disk drive you must run Fdisk and delete and recreate all partitions. Alternatively if you do not have an operating system that supports FAT32 or you do not wish to erase your information from your hard disk drive if you are using Windows 95 OSR2 you can also use the software utility Partition Magic which can manage the hard disk drive and enable FAT32 support.
