TITLE: Windows permissions (file/folder access denied errors) after restoring

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Discussion

When restoring to a different machine or a newly installed operating system, Retrospect will restore files and folders with the permissions/privileges from the original machine. Since the ownership of the files belong to a different user account, you may see "access denied" errors when trying to open restored files.

Changing Ownership with Windows XP PROFESSIONAL

To change the ownership of these files to the current local user:

1. Check My Computer > Tools > Folder Options > View, and uncheck "Use Simple File Sharing".

2. Right-click the file/folder you are trying to access, go to Properties.

3. Go to Security > Advanced > Owner and highlight the user account on your machine that you would like to take ownership of these files/folders.

Be sure to check the box below, "Replace owner on subcontainers and folders" so all files within the folder will inherit the changes.

Changing Ownership with Windows XP HOME

You must boot into Safe Mode and then follow the instructions above
