tmaloney
I installed Symancec VPN on one of my computers (XP Machine sp2 with microsoft firewall off and symantec internet security on with retrospect client allowed) that uses retrospect client to be backed up by a host machine. Before the vpn install, my retrospect 6.5 backups worked great. After the installation, even though I could ping the computer with the VPN software by the backup computer (the Retrospect Host if you will), I would get an error -530 on the log when the computer was supposed to back up. When I tried to look at the client from the host via the test function, I received a -541 error. When I uninstalled the VPN software off the client pc, my backups began to run normally. Are you aware of a conflict with the 8.0 version of Symantec's VPN client or does all the other discussions posted concerning xp firewall and vpn's apply? I tried uninstalling and reinstalling retrospect client, and that did not work. I tried the -ipsave binding command to no avail. Thanks!
natew
Hi VPNs will often change the way multicast packets are routed so the client cannot be found. If you disconnect from the VPN do you have the same trouble? Thanks Nate
tmaloney
To be able to have the automated backup to work correctly, that is access the computer with the vpn software, I have to remove the vpn software totally from my computer. Having said that, with the vpn software installed, but not running actively (it does run as a process in the background), I can do and immediate backup (by running a script). To do that, I have to have a clean boot of the client computer and verify that the host/back up computer "sees" the client in Retrospect. I am always able to ping the client from the host via a dos ping command. So, long story short, I have the problem with the vpn not being connected/active. Thanks! natew
Hi It sounds like the service that the VPN client runs is throwing off the client. Does stopping the VPN service make a difference? How are your scripting skills? You could write a simple Retrospect Event handler script that does a net stop / net start on the VPN service when your script runs. The users guide has more details in the "external scripts" section. tmaloney
Nate- thanks for the response. My scripting skills are suspect but I have a son who could do it over the holidays. I am confused about what the "net stop" command will do in regards to solving my problem. As to your question of "does stopping the VPN service make a difference"- the answer is "NO". I have to totally remove all of the VPN client software from my computer in order to get Retrospect to function normally again. I do know that there are logging processes occuring in the background by the vpn software. I do not know if that contributes to the problem. Thanks for your help thus far! natew
Hi Net stop will stop a service, net start starts one. However that may not help here. You might want to visit the website of the VPN software company. I would bet Retrospect client is not the only software that has troubles when the VPN is installed. I would bet that the VPN software installs another network adapter on the machine. Retrospect is probably looking at that one as the default.
