Duplicate backup - not all files backed up.

I am new to 'Retrospect' and have a few questions I hope someone can help me with.

(1) I am using Retrospect v6.02. This is an oem version shipped with my Maxtor external hard drive. Would I gain anything by upgrading to the latest version 6.5?

(2) When I do a duplicate back up not all the files in my source are backed up. Why would this happen and what can I do to back up all the files. Retrospect Duplicate Backup claims to do an exact copy but in my case this doesn't happen. I checked the script and I checked the files to be copied. They are all selected.

(3) When I added a new folder to my duplicate backup source the new folder was not included in the one touch button backup. When I checked the folders, the folder was listed but was not selected. Is there a way in which I can get Retrospect to automatically include any new additions to the source.

Hope someone can help me with these.

Thanks.

Yes. Network backup of 2 other computers. The ability to run paralell operations. The ability to store your file selections. email notification. The list is long...

What files are being excluded? Are you using a selector to remove some files?

Unless you use a selector every thing should be copied. Is this an empty folder? Empty folders behave a little differently than others.

Thanks

Hello Nate,

Many thanks for your reply.

(1) (Regarding upgrading.) Thanks. Will upgrade to the latest version.

(2) (Files missing in duplicate backup.) The missing files were just a few applications I bought online with some text documents of their license numbers. I deleted the Maxtor OneTouch script and made a new one and now the duplicate is working fine. All files are present in the duplicate backup!

(3) (New folder not included in duplicate backup.) You got it in one! It's an empty folder. I did this to test the duplicate backup. I put some files in the empty folder and just tried it again and it all worked.

Can you tell us a bit more about empty folders. If for some reason best known to ourselves we wanted to include empty folders how would this be done?

Many thanks .. you give great support.

Hi

Files take up physical space on a hard disk. They are "real" so to speak. Folders are noted in the disk structure but they are more virtual items. As such Retrospect doesn't actually copy folders. Instead it notes thier position on a source disk and recreates an identical new folder on the destination.

When a folder is empty Retrospect does not need to copy any files into said folder. As a result it does not get created on the destnation. I'm not sure exactly why this is but there is a reason somewhere...

Hope that helps

Nate
