Important errors?

Hi,

I upgraded this week from Retrospect 6.0 Express to 6.5 Professional. Reason a.o. the possibility 6.5 offers for open-file-backup.

I still get some errors with 6.5 see enclosed logfile.

Are these errors important, or can I forget it and went the back-up ok?

Retrospect runs on my laptop, and I backup to a Maxtor external harddisk.

I am not a software professional, but when I look at the logfile, I think:

- GoBack program from Symantec, no problem since it makes only images.

-Skype program, no problem since I can always re-install this when there would be a disaster recovery

-\Temp\-DF84f and -DF857 and -ZLT0379a, probably no problem since these are items in a temporary file

-\ViriusDefs\ from Symantec, no problem since can be update by life-update after a disaster

-\T-Mobile\ is a program that was downloaded to install on for my PDA and easy to reinstall

-\Internet Logs\ probably caused by the fact that the laptop stays connected to the internet during backups.

My conclusion would be: the 13 execution errors will probably not give a problem when I have to use the Retrospect backup set D in case of a disaster recovery.

It is a pitty however that at the top of the logfile is mentioned:

Can't use Open File Backup option for Station (C:), error -1017 (insufficient permissions)

I have seen that this topic is discussed many times on the forum but is there a good sollution to solve this?

It is my first post on this forum, hope I have been clear and look to your reactions.

What OS are you using? OFB is avaiable under the local XP OS (Pro for sure) even if the optional OFB (sold by Dantz) isn't purchased.

On some (many?) XP systems, the OFB option isn't working due to "issues" with the Volume Shadow Copy service in XP. Take a look at your Even Viewer (under Control Panel->Admin tools) and see if anything is mentioned here.

I have seen the paid OFB option work with Retrospect on systems where I would otherwise get an "Can't use Open File Backup" [included via a failing VSC in XP].

Hi,

Thank you for your quick reaction.

Answers:

I am using Windows XP home edion incl. SP2.

I looked in eventviewer. Yes there is listed an error at 18.02.01, id.nr. 4001; source vss. It is saying things about inability to make volume shadow copy service since it could find no area to make these and that there is no station with NTFS and that I should add that.

Indeed I am running the disks still with FAT 32.

I will make the changement FAT 32 to NTFS later, since this seems to be inreversable and I want first to see that I will not running into problems doing so.

Could you or anyone else see in the logfile I have sent befor if the way I am using Retrospect to make backups could give problems in case I have to use the backup in a disaster recovery?

  • 1 month later...

I made the changement from FAT 32 to NTFS for the C: and for the external disk F:

The errorcode 1017 is disappeared, I can work with open files too. No errors at all!

I can now make clean back-ups.

As you can see:
