  1. So I have a script that backs up my network, including a sometimes-connected laptop. If it's there, I definitely want it included with my nightly backups. But when it's not there, I get a slew of errors. While I understand these errors are to be expected (at least the way I have it set up), I am wondering if there is a more elegant way for Retrospect to know that if the laptop is connected, back it up - and if it's not connected, stop trying and stop spitting out errors for 20 minutes.
  2. Hello, I am using images in this post in hopes that it will clarify what I am doing. I apologize if they don't do that. Please let me know if any further info is required. I'm using Retrospect Version 10.5: I am trying to restore my Windows 10 PC from a backup, because I could no longer boot into Windows 10 when when powering on. I am using the Retrospect Recovery CD. I first tried to restore over the original windows installation, but that failed with the same errors and I still could not boot into Windows. So I deleted the Windows partition and reinstalled Windows from a Windows installation CD. I can now boot into Windows 10. I then used the Retrospect Recovery CD and attempted to restore the Windows drive from my backup set (named "Archive_Drive"). I configure the restore options as the image below shows: Within minutes after starting the restore, I get a dialog box that states "Warning: All data on the following volumes will be lost:" The volume is the drive that contains the backup set used to restore the drive: At this point I cancel the operation. I have tried renaming the Windows drive letter to "C:" but the same dialog box appears. I don't want to click "OK" since I fear that it will wipe out my backup set files! Here is a list of the drive configuration (from the Retrospect Recovery CD "Configure drives" option): I am restoring to the "G:" drive. Any help is appreciated. Greg Noelken
  3. I have Retrospect Desktop Version running on my Windows 10 machine and I'm getting an error in the retrospect logs. Has anyone see an error like this in their logs? [!] *RefObjectFactory: unknown object to create: id:51, refnum:7,847, consig:"VMC1" My background is with Retrospect Express 7 (a long time ago) and so when I decided that I needed to get off "Cloud storage", I purchased Retrospect Desktop with five client backup. It went okay for a while, I'm having some problems right now. I have an old 8GB Plextor NAS storage array that stores my backups and I've run into a problem where retrospect starts up and stalls (never moves forward and never completes the backup). I found the error above in the retrospect log today. I'm not sure if the problem is on the backup data or my laptop drive. The behavior that I see is that retrospect starts up and immediately wants to create a new member (even when the previous member is not full--it can actually be empty). After it creates the new member, nothing else happens. The backup stalls. I've tried to transfer the backup to a new backup set. I've tried to groom the backup set, and I still get the same behavior of trying to create a new member. Right now I have a backup set that has three members: the first is 98% and the 2nd and 3rd are 100% free and when I start up, Retrospect wants to create a 4th backup set. The NAS storage has plenty of free space. Any clues or pointers of where to look? Thanks! Alan Edwards
  4. I have Retrospect on Windows Server 2012 R2. I'm trying to rebuild the catalogue (again) so I can restore some files, but the rebuild procedure has failed twice. The errors I got this time were: Can't create Snapshot, error -1001 ( unknown Windows OS error) Can't save Catalog File, error -1001 ( unknown Windows OS error) Can anyone suggest what these errors might be and how I can fix them? I have an urgent requirement to restore some files but with the catalogue file broken it's not possible. Why does the catalogue file break every so often anyway? Thanks, Dan Jackson (Lead ITServices Technician).
  5. I apologize for the cross-post; however, I originally posted this in the wrong forum.... We have two installs of Retrospect 8.1.0 (266); one is running on Windows SBS 2011 and the other is running on Windows Server 2012. Our installation on SBS 2011 is working just fine. Backups run as scheduled and media is ejected afterwards. However, on our Windows Server 2012 install, the backups run as scheduled but the RD1000 media will not eject automatically. Instead, we receive an error message stating that there was an Error Ejecting Media and that it is in use. We have to stop the Retrospect software and then manually eject the media from Windows Explorer and then restart the Retrospect software. Has anyone run into this issue before? Any insight is greatly appreciated.
  6. Currently running Retrospect 10.5.0 on Snow Leopard Machine: Processor Speed: 2.66 GHz Number Of Processors: 2 Total Number Of Cores: 4 L2 Cache (per processor): 4 MB Memory: 13 GB HDD Capacity: 496 GB Available: 396.91 GB Have been using Retrospect 10 to rebuild catalogues that were previously being used within version 6. The rebuilds have been going fine but lately I have been getting an error of: '!Not enough application memory'. Nothing in my opinion has changed from when we started rebuilding catalogs and in my opinion I would think that the machine being used has plenty of system memory. Has anyone else come across this error on rebuild/repair? Surely there should be an easy solution to this that I'm just missing, or isit simply a bug? Any info would be great. Thanks
  7. If, after having done a backup, some errors show up in the verifying phase I would expect Retrospect to take note of the files or part of files (if using the block level incremental system) that were not correctly done and mark them so they will be included in the next backup. But, when I see many errors, I restart the job and usually no file (nor a part of one) are backuped again. Can I be sure that the data is already backuped correctly?. My system uses a Retrospect Professional for Windows version 10.5 backuping to DVDs. Regards Agustín
  8. Hello there. Running Retrospect 8.1 on Windows 8. The Activity Monitor opens to to screen to select 'Schedules' , 'History' etc, but nothing happens when you click on any of the options. Really need to have access to these and it's driving me crazy. Anyone have any idea why it won't open? Thanks!

  10. The following log is for a media set copy beetween FW disks. The source verifies without error, and so does the copy. What, exactly, doe the error mean? Is this likely to be a transient error caused by the inherent less-than-perfect electronics and the enormous amount of data being transferred? Are the "headers" re-calculated" when the new file is written? If transient, when getting such an error, does Retro re-read the data to ensure that the subsequent read does not get the error? Do tell. I would like to know more about exactly what this error means. I do not want to lose confidence in the media sets with this error. OTOH, if this IS a real error, I want to re-do the operation and/or track it down. Thanks
  11. I got an error on a restore today. The log: Log for Script: Restore Assistant - 1/17/15 12:15 AM... What operation failed? It would be nice to list which file/directory/operation actually failed. If it did fail, why does it say the script "completed successfully"? The the failure is irrelevant (script successful, right?) then why list it? Inquiring minds want to know. ;->
  12. I am getting the error "Scanning Incomplete -516 Illegal Request". Any suggestions. I tried some of the suggestions in the link below and about nuked a critical file installation file. http://forums.retrospect.com/index.php?/topic/150083-trouble-reading-files-error-516-illegal-request/ How do you fix this issue? It just creeped up this last week. Nothing has changed on the client machine. So I don't know???
  13. I had a couple of old scripts where the source and destinations had been deleted. I tried to copy and modify one of them, to add source and destination to use it. What I saw was really odd. The number of available backups for restore ops should be large (50+?). I saw 7. I looked at other restore scripts, and they all seemed to show just the same 7 restore options. (2 screenshots attached) I then tried to delete the script. The "really delete" dialog came up, but the script would not go away. I tried several times. I restarted the console, and the backups reappeared, and the scripts could be deleted. Bug. Not sure if I could reproduce it.

  15. Hello, We have a Retrospect 10 server with a proactive backup script, and this error appears in the script logs. "!Trouble reading files, error -519 ( network communication failed ) We have 10 Mac clients all setup to backup proatively. This error appears in the logs for various clients at one time or another. Questions: 1. What could possibly cause this error? 2. Where should I start troubleshooting? Any tips/tricks on isolating the cause, or minimizing it as much as possible so we can get more successful proactive backups. Our Configuration: -Apple MacMini, 2Ghz ZIntel Core 2 Duo, 2GB ram -OSX 10.6.8 -Retrospect server 10.1.0 (221) -Retrospect client 11.0.0 (191) Thanks for your time.
  16. Retrospect 8.5 crashed hard, and corrupted the configXX.dat file over the weekend. I tried restoring this, but was unsuccesful. I had to obtain the product license keys and basically start over with everything. There are only 2 backup sets (servers, and servers2) backup set "servers" was recycled before the crash, and only backed up for about 2 hours (meaning it only has 2 hours worth of backup data altogether) backup set "servers2" seems to still be intact and as it was (meaning all of the .rdb files are still in their original location) I succesfully recataloged "servers" with no issues. However when I perform the same steps on "servers2" I get the error message: "The Backup Set data file name is invalid, cannot recatalog the set using these files" Any input or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks
  17. I recently have taken to running a "verify" on all my backup sets on a schedule, so I get some notification when the HW starts having trouble reading the media. On the most recent rotation, I see this: - 5/11/14 2:58:58 PM: Verifying v9_iCompute_last !Generated MD5 digest for file "Quantum18G/Household/Parties/dot75party.sitx" does not match stored MD5 digest. When I restore from this set, I see this: + Restore using aRestoreTest at 5/13/14 (Activity Thread 1) To volume z-junk... - 5/13/14 3:54:08 PM: Restoring from v9_iCompute_last, Snapshot Joy, 4/28/14 4:22:15 AM !An error occurred during the verification step. I can't re-do the backup, since this was copied over from another set, and the original backup source has changed. Is there a way to "fix" this?It looks like I have one file that somehow has a bad/missing checksum. Is this because the copy operation from the other backup set dropped a bit? Is it a Retro bug? Inquiring minds want to know.
  18. We have a couple of Old Macs we use Retrospect v5.6 running on a WindowsXP machine, but we are getting the following error: 'failed during automatic execution, error -1123 (Volume Structure Corrupt)'. Our version of Retrospect is WinXP compatible. Any help would be appreciated.... Thank you.
  19. I have run into what I think is a new poblem with 10.2.0 (201) where I can't retrieve backups on a media set. It's a disk media set, and has a bunch of backups. I want to copy off one backup per month for 2012, so I go to the media set and select all the first-of-the-month backups in 2012 to set up for the copy. All the "retrieve" "jobs" fail. I verified the backup set. OK. I finally tried retrieving the backups one at a time, and it worked fine. If I tried to do more than one at a time, i would always fail. Log lof failing jobs ooked like this: + Executing Retrieve Backup at 8/31/13 (Activity Thread 1) From Backup Set v9_vm3_last... !Trouble writing files, error -1101 ( file/directory not found) Can't retrieve Snapshot for session vm3, Local Disk (C:), 12/3/12, error -1101 ( file/directory not found) 8/31/13 11:15:47 PM: Execution incomplete Completed: 1 files, 0 B Performance: 0 MB/minute Duration: 00:00:11
  20. I get the following errors at the start of every backup, but the backup seems to run OK anyway. Can someone tell me what this means? MapError: unknown Windows error -1,017 VssWAddComponentToSnapshot: UGetComponentInfo failed., osErr -1017, error -1001 Note that I am running on Windows 8, with Retrospect Professional v8.1 (surprisingly, just bought this yesterday and didn't get v8.2 for the download). I am backing up to an external WD Passport drive.
  21. I'm using Retrospect 10.1.0 (221) on a Xserve, running OSX 10.7.5. During some of my last backups (network storage, to another network storage) I get the following error code: "FScSetWhichNodeInfo: USetWhichNodeInfo failed: -43" Retrospect indicates that the backup was completed succesfully (with the green mark sign, and in the log), but this error code keeps appearing. I have been checking the error code table on the support page, but can't find this one. Does anybody know what this error might mean? Thanks in advance for your help!
  22. Has anyone seen this error? It's showing up in the full log quite frequently (today's log anyway), but I can't tell you exactly HOW frequently, because my log is filled already for today… There is no timestamp on these entries… I can ballpark from the events that run on either side…but that's not really ideal. nertPInstMake: wrong serial number: sought ###-####-####-####, but found #-####-####-####-### I've submitted a support request, I couldn't find anything in the KB, forums, or internet.
  23. Hi! I have recently been trying out the new Retrospect 10 and unfortunately I have had the same trouble with it as Retrospect 9. Whenever I try to backup to our HP Ultrium 448 LTO2 SCSI drive on Mac OS X 10.7.3 I get a "error -100 ( device rejected command)" which effectively aborts the backup. I have no trouble short erasing or long erasing tapes and adding them to backup sets. It is only when I try to backup to them that the error occurs. Anybody got any ideas what to do next? Backup with PreSTORE and BRU to this drive works without issues. Cheers, Chris W.
  24. I have been running the 9.0.2 client on my "primary" desktop system. (Macbook Pro, Mac OS X 10.6.8) Today, with the server at the 10.1.0 (187) level, and seemingly running well, I decided to get brave and upgrade the client to 10.0.0 (174) Backups now report this: + Normal backup using daily_user at 3/15/13 (Activity Thread 1) To Backup Set v9_daily_user... - 3/15/13 3:37:21 PM: Copying Users on Witsend Using Instant Scan MacStateRem::msttDoBackup: VolDirGetMeta failed err -516 !Can't read state information, error -516 ( illegal request) 3/15/13 3:37:58 PM: Execution incomplete Completed: 26 files, 10.5 MB Performance: 209.9 MB/minute Duration: 00:00:24 (00:00:20 idle/loading/preparing) What is this, and how do I fix it, aside from going back to the 9.0 client? If it's relevant, I did the upgrade of the client via the console remotely. The 9.0 client had hung, and I did a quit of "retroclient" (stuck at 100% cpu) in the middle of the upgrade. I then re-did the upgrade. I have not yet re-booted the machine. I'll be doing that now.
