  1. Will using an SSD drive reduce the time it takes Retrospect to search catalogs and that sort of thing? Will it make Retrospect faster? Are SSD drives reliable enough to take on this task? Which ones are good with mac pros? Thanks in advance! mike

  3. Hello, I have an ATTO SAS card in my Mac pro that runs an LTO 5 drive. I want to add another PCI card to the backup machine (Dual channel Ultra Wide SCSI card-ATTO) to run my older exabyte mammoth archives, and I wondered if there were any issues that specifically affect Retrospect when it comes to PCI bus traffic and card slot order. Is it OK to have both cards installed? BTW, I am running the backup machine remotely so there is no video card in it. I VNC into the machine to control it. As of now the card slots look like this: 1. empty (this is where the video card would have been) 2. empty 3. empty 4. ATTO SAS card Any thoughts as to what the best order would be for the two cards to coexist? Any other thoughts? Thanks in advance! Mike PS. this is cross posted in the forum for Rretrospect 8. I hope that wasn't a no no.

  5. Hi lennart! Tapes have been stored in a big safe and are from 2009. I have tried other tapes but I haven't checks those for errors. I suspect that they also had errors.
  6. I have been recatalogging old backup sets and in doing so there seems to be some errors where it can't read the tape. I know that all of the tapes were verified at one point during their backup lives (btw, tapes only get written to once, I don't reuse tapes), but after the recatalog and the incurred errors the some files were missing when I restored a big project. SO, what are my options other than sending the tape off to a very expensive data recovery place? Are there any "Retrospect Friendly" software tools (similar to Tolis' Tape Tools) that can read tapes an save the files to disk? As far as trouble shooting, I have tried different drives and I've tried recataloging a couple times over the same tape. Still I get errors. I did clean the drives with the cleaning tape as well. Any help is appreciated! Thanks! Mike
  7. As it turns out. It seems that the drive has a problem rewinding. I'm pretty sure the tape Itself is ok.
  8. There are 5 gold plated contacts on the back edge of the ait tapes. I was told that there was a chip on. Jars the tapes. I'm no expert either.
  9. Thanks lennart! Would the chip on the ait tape matter if the tape was swapped?
  10. Anyone ever have an 8mm tape that developed da mechanical problem but the tape itself was ok? Can the tape be transferred to a new cassette? Mike
  11. I need to rebuild all my v6 catalogs, which span exabyte tapes and AIT2 tapes, into v8 catalogs. My question is, did retrospect v6, in combination with AIT 2 tapes, have the quick rebuild feature? Will retrospect v8 need to catalog all tapes? Or do I have to rebuild from the first tape? Thanks Mike
  12. Whenever I need to restore something and I only want to restore a selected folder, it takes a LONG time to get to that window where you can preview what it is you are going to back up and then select it. It is also very slow when you select items and deseleting items within that window. My backup sets are quite large, almost. I am using an older dual duo Core mac (2.2GHz) and retro 8.2. I have been waiting to jump to v9 and I wanted to know if things are any different. Question: in this restore situation, is the sluggish response caused by the program?, the Mac? or maybe the backup set is just too big? any insight is appreciated! thanks Mike
  13. Hi Lennart, No, I haven't tried. The restore is over a Terabyte, so I wanted to investigate before I resume the proactive script that backs up that drive. Is there a setting I need to change in my script to have it ignore the dates? Or is the program smart enough to know? BTW, I am posting this in the wrong forum. I am using v8.2, not v9. Sorry. Thanks Mike
  14. I know this is possible, but I don't know if I can do it after the restore is already done? I can see that most of the folder dates are all new. Anyone have any tips? Thanks! Mike
  15. I just can't bring myself to she'll out more money to fix broken software product that has caused me more trouble than any other software I can remember. It would seem to me that if retrospect wants to spread the word about a great "new" product, they should get the word on the street going the right direction. I can honestly say I would never recommend v8 of this software. In fact the buggy nature of it has led me to recommend other alternatives on several occasions. I still have Retrospect v6 setup on a dedicated machine and it's the most solid version. Yes I do run v8 now but it's like "don't touch it, it's broken". I too agree with many others who feel that v8 is a broken product that should have received the fixes necessary to make it least stable. Come on, we're talking about a "backup software". And yes i do mean "broken". So instead of fixing something that was obviously broken, retrospect/roxio has chosen to blatantly ignore that fact. Feels like a cut and run. Had the upgrade been closer to a symbolic sum of money, it would have shown a level of "good will" that I would be willing to match. But sadly the upgrade path shows no measurable good will beyond what a normal upgrade for a fully functioning working product is.
  16. Will Version 9 be able to continue with the storage sets started in V8? mike
  17. Hi Twickland! I waited over an hour for the program to come back to life. I managed to trick it back into working by clicking aroudn the different show/hide view options in the window. So, I managed to make a new backup of some files that I was having to a new backup set. I still have to get the other backup sets tested to see if they are working. thanks again! mike
  18. OK, new problem. I can't add a new tape storage set. It hangs right after I press the "plus" symbol for adding a new storage set. I solved this once before by reinstalling retrospect, but is there a way to reset the program so that I can fix this? Thanks!
  19. Thanks for the tips!! I will make those copies. Mike
  20. As in deleting some preferences files or clean installs etc in order to keep it happy? Just wondering. thanks mike
