Scalar 100AIT Doesn't Change Tapes

Recommended Posts

Dual AIT Scalar 100 under OSX 10.2.6. The picker does not change tapes after they are full. The Retro dialog box asks for a blank tape. The AIT drives are spaced 3 SCSI IDs apart and the picker is on the 2nd Channel of an ATTO UL3D @ address B1. All devices are recognized by Retrospect. The Scalar has been qualified by Dantz.

It's running as a backup server continuously and the 'matrix' cursor is running...I'm assuming that is what you mean by unattended mode.

"Scan media" does not work (like it does on our Scalar 220)

We have since also moved the picker to the same SCSI bus as the drives (drive 1= 0; drive=3; column=6)

Scalar firmware is 2.83

still no luck

If you can't "scan media" then Retrospect will not change tapes.

Make sure the unit is in "SCSI" or "Random mode" not "Sequential" mode.

Another item (totally unrelated):

Retrospect for Macintosh does not support Import/Export slots. To use all storage slots available with Retrospect for Macintosh, configure the Import/Export slots as fixed storage.

The ADIC Scalar 100 does not provide any "SCSI" or "Random mode" or "Sequential" mode...it is not an available option that we can find.

We've now taken our functioning OS9 Backup Server and attached it to a second identical Scalar 100 and still cannot scan tapes....yet this OS9 server was functioning correctly with a Scalar 220. We notice that there is no driver loaded for the AIT100 under OS9 in this machine (as there is no driver loaded in OSX either)

[so how can this machine be qualified if it doesn't run on either OS9 or X?]

Next step??????

...thanks for your help so far

UPDATE:

After a reboot of the OS9 Machine, we can see the driver version displayed and loader pull down menu again as well as the bin inventory on the Scalar 100. Wired to single SCSI buss the loader is picking and erasing the tapes on only 1 of the 2 drives....so it's currently mimicking the Scalar 220.

So this issue seems to be an OSX problem???

We do not even see a driver loaded on the OSX version.

In the OS X set-up, are both the drives and the library on the same SCSI channel? I believe they have to be.

Other than that, I can tell you that we just tested our LTO version and it worked fine in OS 10.2.6. The AIT one should act no differently.

Another thing with the Scalar 100 is it's a matter of patience. If you open the door or boot it up, it takes about 6 minutes at least for the library to recover, during that time Retrospect will not be able to make the pop-up window occur.

Turn on SCSI logging by going to the Special tab, hold down the Option key and click Preferences. Under SCSI, enable SCSI logging. Quit Retrospect, relaunch and go to Configure > Devices. After the device scan, turn off SCSI logging and take a look at your Operations Log. You may find an entry indicating that the loader and drive were 'expected' at certain ID's. See if these ID's match the current SCSI ID configuration.
