Really slow polling in Backup Server

Recommended Posts

I've just upgraded to 5.0 running on an 8100 with a Newer MaxPower 250Mhz G3 card, 144MB RAM, with 2 Sony DDS-3 SDT-9000 SCSI DAT drives and an Asante 10/100 card, Mac OS 9.1. This machine had been running v 4.3 beautifully for about a year using a Backup Server Script. After installing v 5.0, everything seems fine (immediate backups and restores work great; under "configure..clients..network..." all of the clients show up promptly) BUT when the Backup Server script runs, the client polling becomes dog-slow. For example, it took 40 minutes before the "about to begin" dialog box popped up on the first machine in the list, then 25 minutes later, the actual backup began. Once the backup starts, everything seems to proceed normally, about 25MB/min, which is what I used to get on this machine. The problem seems to be only related to the polling of the network machines. The checkerboard icon seems almost frozen during the polling phase, and the scroll arrows don't work (or work so slowly they are not usable) as if the CPU is maxed out. This is a huge change from the behavior under 4.3, where 80 machines were polled in under 5 minutes. Any ideas why this may be happening?

Thanks in advance
