Question on License with SQL Server

If you are using MSDE 2000 the free version included with many small network applications, does this use a SQL license to properly back up the database? Being that it is not the full blown SQL 2000 or SQL 7, I am unsure what to expect when dealing with licensing.

This is the breakdown of minimum requirements as outlined in the Knowlegebase and User's Guide:

The Retrospect agent for SQL works with the following combinations of operating system software and database software.

- SQL Server 2000 with Service Pack 3, Windows Server 2003

- SQL Server 2000 with Service Pack 2, Windows 2000 Server with Service Pack 2 (SP3 optional)

- SQL Server 2000 with Service Pack 2, Windows NT 4.0 Server with Service Pack 6a

- SQL Server 7 with Service Pack 4, Windows 2000 Server with Service Pack 2

- SQL Server 7 with Service Pack 4, Windows NT 4.0 Server with Service Pack 6a
