I have Retro configured to use an account which is an administrator of the server and a domain administrator too. The backup source volumes and target are all local to the server where Retro runs. Are you using the SQL agent or is your ultimate goal to backup the SQL data via the open file backup? What system version is this? Windows 2000 Advanced Server Check the Launcher Service and make sure it is configured with default settings (run as system account). Launcher is configured to run as system account. "Interact with desktop" is checked. Is there any material difference with respect to Open File Backup among the following scenarios: 1. Launcher set to LocalSystem; Administrator is presently logged in; Retrospect is running (never quits); Preferences, Execution, Security is set to always run as gstrickland . 2. Launcher set to LocalSystem; gstrickland is presently logged in; Retrospect is running (never quits); Preferences, Execution, Security is set to always run as gstrickland. 3. Launcher set to LocalSystem; nobody is presently logged in; Retrospect is not running (since nobody is logged in); Preferences, Execution, Security is set to always run as gstrickland . We definitely need *somebody* to be logged into this server at all times, because we have a couple of critcal applications which can't be run as services. For example, our Kyocera digital copier/scanner/printer uses a helper application on the server to save scan files to user folders. We've tried various utilities which are supposed to be able to turn any application into a service (including the Microsoft tools which ship in the 2000 Resource Kit), but it just won't run reliably as a service. So option no. 3 above, won't work for us. I noticed you are using SQL. Are you using the SQL agent or is your ultimate goal to backup the SQL data via the open file backup? I do not have the SQL agent. However, my SQL databases are not all that critical. Instead, I have a script which runs within SQL server which once a day creates full copies of my databases and puts them in a special directory. Since the copies are not open or in use when Retro runs, Retro can back them up. The failures that you see in the log are because I forgot to re-exclude most of SQL when I recreated my scripts from scratch after uprading from 6.0 to 6.5. After I fix that, I won't have any further errors on the sql part of this. Everyone here goes home by 7:00 p.m. most days. At 8:00 p.m. my sql server makes a copy of my databases. At 9:00 p.m. Retro kicks off and backs up the copies of the databases. Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Or, try creating a brand new user account with full admin rights. Are there any other backup software (Veritas, etc.) or open file (Clear Case, St. Bernards, etc.)applications installed on this system? If so, make sure they are completely uninstalled. Is Retrospect automatically launching itself or is it left open after being manually launched? Do you have the latest Service Packs installed for the OS? I am not backing up the "My Computer Container." At least, I don't believe that I am. When you look at "source" for the script in question, three local drives are defined. I'll be glad to send or post a screen shot if if would help. Was the server rebooted after install? Yes, and many times since. If you do a "net start" at the command line does "Retrospect Launcher" show up in the list of running services? Yes. And I have re-verified that the Administrator has maximum rights to every source and target resource by checking the security settings of each volume. The problem persists. Retro 6.5 with Open File Backup installed and license showing is failing to start/invoke OFB due to "1017 insufficient permissions" despite the fact that Retro is using the Administrator account which has maximum rights to EVERYTHING.
