USB Harddrive Speed

Recommended Posts

What kind of speed is considered NORMAL for doing a disk or file backup to an external USB 2.0 harddrive?

I am running Retro 6.0 on a Win2000 Adv. Server pc which is backing up its own local drives to its own external USB 2.0 harddrive. The actual drive is an ATA 133 Maxtor inside a USB 2.0 enclosure.

-- ATA is rated at 133 MegaBYTES per SECOND througput

-- USB 2.0 is rated at 60 MegaBYTES per SECOND throughput

-- Retrospect is achieving 1.1 MegaBYTES per SECOND throughput.

Why is Retrospect so slow? Why is it not achieving but about 1/60th of the USB 2.0 potential?

Do you have encryption or data compression enabled in Retrospect?

How many MB/Min does the operations log actually report?

What does the log report for copy and for compare? How many files and MB/GB are being copied? Feel free to copy and paste a section of the log for us to view.

No.

The bottom line speed varies from 65 MB/Min to 75 MB/Min.

Thanks for forcing me to read my own log. I was focused on the bottom line speed and failed to appreciate some of the other factors, like the fact that one of my sources is an 80 MB/Sec SCSI array, whereas another is a 133 MB/Sec ATA drive. Still, it all seems slower than it should be.

Hi,

Your log clearly shows that you have software data compression turned on inside of Retrospect, "31% compression".

This will slow down the backup greatly.

Go to the backup "options" in the script or immediate and turn off compression.
