rr2
Hello Everyone, OK. I'm getting tired of changing CDs and hoping to move to dvd-r/rw for backup. Anyone know if the cendyne dvd-rw (pioneer dvr-105) is supported by retrospect. Would it work when housed in an external firewire case. Thanks for your answers - Ram iBook 700 combo OS X 10.2.
Mayoff
Hi, You can use the following URL to search for supported devices. http://www.dantz.com/index.php3?SCREEN=compatibility_list You can not typically take an ATAPI CD/DVD drive and put it inside your own USB/Firewire case. Dantz has to test and qualify the USB/Firewire bridge. The device reference will indicate if we support a specific Firewire or USB version of a drive model. rr2
Mayoff - Thanks for your response. I did search the hardware database and found no such devices listed. However, it seems to me that the database may be somewhat incomplete. For example I have an Acomdata external firewire 32x10x40CDRW (Mitsumi crx48ate) which is not listed in the database but seems to work just fine and shows up as being supported in Retrospect. I have made backups and restores with this successfully in OS X. - Ram
Mayoff
If a device does not show up in the search engine, then it is not a supported device. The device database you search, is the same database we use internally at Dantz. It is current and up to date. In some cases, Retrospect may load a device driver for a drive, but that does not mean the drive is "supported". In some cases using a device that appears to work, but is not on the supported list can result in dataloss when trying to restore data in the future. Retrospect 6.0 does have an "Auto-Configurator" tool that allows you to build a custom driver for CD-R devices that are not officially supported. This driver may work just fine for most users. Check out these Knowlegebase items on Auto Configurator: http://www.dantz.com/index.php3?SCREEN=kbase&ACTION=KBASE&id=27577 http://www.dantz.com/index.php3?SCREEN=kbase&ACTION=KBASE&id=27637
rr2
Unfortunately it looks like the custom configurator works with Windows only.
