plb
I use CD-R media for my back-ups. I'm wondering - is it truly necessary to use verification with this type of media? To me, it seems that burning a CD-R is a fairly fail-safe mechanism unlikely to go wrong and thus benefit from the compare. Tech Support says yes - it must be done. I'd like to hear your thoughts. Thanks.
AmyJ
Yes, yes, yes, yes. No media is fail-safe -- especially CD-R media. There is a huge variability in quality -- even within the same brand. Without verification, it is impossible to know if the data was copied properly or not - until you need to restore it that is... Verification simulates a restore in that it ensures that the files are readable. Not only should you verify, but you should also ensure that you are using name brand, quality media - preferably something on the hardware vendor's media compatibility list.
