Decifering Operations Log

Hi,

I'd like to figure out if what the log is telling me is what I need.

1. It says on the log "Resolved container My Computer container to 2 volumes:

IBM Preload (C:)

Drive E (E:)"

It's supposed to be backing up drive C only. Drive E is the external USB drive it should backup to. What

options should I select to remove Drive E from the container? I don't understand how it got there I only

chose to backup drive C:.

2. It says on the log "Copying IBM Preload (C:)

File "C:\Windows\Temp\ZLT00d42.TMP": can't read, error -1020 (sharing violation)"

I have in my Script to exclude the folder C:\Windows\Temp

My Script shows:

Include everything

but always exclude files matching

File name matches pattern c:\hiberfile.sys

or matching

Folder name matches pattern C:\Windows\Temp

or matching

Folder name matches pattern c:\recycler

or matching

File name matches pattern c:\Pagefile.sys

or matching

Folder name matches pattern C:\Windows\Modem~1

or matching

Folder name matches pattern C:\Windows\Internet Logs

or matching

File name matches pattern C:\Winodws\inf\nv4.pnf

or matching

File name matches pattern C:\Windows\prefetch\layout.ini

or matching

File name matches pattern C:\Drivers\Video\Nvib.pnf

or matching

Folder name matches pattern C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Microsoft\Network\Downloader

or matching

Folder name matches pattern C:\Documents and Settings\Sam\Application Data\Microsoft\HTML Help

or matching

File name matches pattern C:\Documents and Settings\Sam\Cookies\index.dat

or matching

File name matches pattern C:\Documents and Settings\Sam\Local Settings\History\History.IE5\index.dat

or matching

File name matches pattern C:\Documents and Settings\Sam\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\index.dat

or...

Why would it try to backup anything in the C:\Windows\Temp folder?

3. It says in the log "Completed 30 files"

Does this mean that only 30 files changed from the last backup? And if I need to restore all the files will be

restored? Or does this mean that with all of my excludes somehow it thinks all the files left are 30?

4. In the log it says "IBM Preload (C:) on PC1

File "C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Microsoft\Network\Downloader\qmgr0.dat": can't read, error -1020 (sharing violation)

This file is on a client called PC1. I was hoping the excludes in the script applied to all machines being backed

up during this session. Why would it try to backup this file?

Thank you very much for this support,

Gary

You have the Computer Container listed as a source rather then the individual drive. Change your script (or immediate backup) source.

This may be a file that Retrospect is attempting to backup as part of the system state information. Go to Configure > Selectors. Highlight your Selector and click Edit. In the Selector drop-down menu choose Check Selector. Check your selector against your hard drive - does this directory have a check mark next to it? If not, the directory is being excluded from your backup.

Yes, if this was an incremental backup, 30 files were copied.

Try the test from #2 - applying the selector against this client volume. Does the file have a check mark? Another possibility is that the file is in use during the scan, and Retrospect is reporting back out only that it can't be read.

In #1 How can I see what "My computer container" represents? I see this in an EasyScrip along side Sources.

In #2 Yes there is a check mark in C:\windows\Temp. Now what do I need to do to exclude it?

Is it possible that Retrospect will match folders from the script to the hard drive only if the case is correct?

Another words. Will Retrospect not use an exclude if the exclude is C:\windows\Temp and the hard drive

shows C:\WINDOWS\Temp?

Could that be why some of my excludes are not working?

Thank you,

Gary

  • 2 weeks later...

My computer container is all mounted drives. Go to Configure > Volumes. Local drives listed under My Computer will be in the container.

Your selector is: Folder name matches pattern C:\Windows\Temp

This won't work for the following reason --

The _folder name_ is Temp

The _path_ is C:\Windows\Temp

Two different criteria...

You'll need to specify the right type of selector.
