Basic Questions

Recommended Posts

How can you tell the following:

* number of files to be backed up by a given script;

* bytes (or kb, mb, gb, etc.) to be backed up BEFORE compression;

* number of files actually backedup up when the script ran last;

* bytes (or kb, mb, gb, etc.) actually in the backup set AFTER compression;

* compression ratio achieved;

* space used on a particular backup tape (or other target);

* available space on a particular backup tape (or other target)?

Aside from Report Watcher, are there any remote admin or monitoring tools available?

Please forgive these basic questions, but I've looked in the 5.5 manual (never received my 6.0 manual) and looked on the website, but can't find the answers.

1 and 2: It is not possible to get a total for backup on multiple sources on an automated backup. Retrospect will scan the first source and then match it against the backup set catalog to determine how many new or changed files there are. Once this backup is complete, Retrospect will move on to the next drive.

To see a live picture of the number of files needing to be backed up on a drive, you can set up the backup in Immediate Backup with your Source and Destination. Click the preview window, then close the browser window that opens up. You'll see a summary window with a file count on how many files need to be backed up. This is possible in manual operations, but not automated.

3 and 4: You can view the backup report to see how many files were backed up on each source. Retrospect does not give a total for _all_ files backed up across multiple sources. You can also view the total number of files in the backup set as a whole in Configure > Backup Sets > Properties. The summary tab will give information on the total size of the set.

5. Compression information is available in the Operations Log

6 and 7: Configure > Backup Sets > Properties. The summary tab will give information on the total size of the set and how much space is available on a member. The Members tab will give information specific to the amount of data on each set member.
