which version and why

We are currently running Retrospect 5.6 Server version and are backing up three servers (soon to be just two). Retro is installed on one of the servers and then I'm using the Retrospect Client to backup the other two servers as this is what Dantz told me to do to back them up.

Now I am looking at maybe upgrading to 6.0 but I have two questions.

Question 1: Why?

Question 2: Which version? The Single Server version or the Multi-Server version? What does Multi-Server version do that I couldn't do with the Single Server version and a client?

Question 1: Why?

Tech Note – Changes from Retrospect 5.6 to 6.0

Product Name Changes

Retrospect Desktop 5.6 is now Retrospect Professional 6.0

Retrospect Workgroup 5.6 is now Retrospect Single Server 6.0

Retrospect Server 5.6 is now Retrospect Multi Server 6.0

Note: Retrospect Express for Windows is no longer available for individual resale, it is only offered with a bundled hardware device. Users of Retrospect Express 5.6 who wish to upgrade to version 6.0 functionality and features should upgrade to Retrospect Professional 6.0.

System Requirements Changes

Retrospect 6.0 requires Windows 98 or better (though Windows 95 clients are still supported).

Client Licensing Changes

Retrospect Single Server and Multi Server now include unlimited network client licenses. Retrospect Professional now ships with two client licenses for home and small office network backups out of the box. Additional clients may be purchased for Professional. Go to

http://www.dantz.com/index.php3?SCREEN=buy_order_license for pricing information and to purchase.

Interface Changes

Retrospect 6.0 replaces the old-style tabbed interface with a new navigation bar that gives the user immediate access any of the main screens. For example, a user may now go directly to Configure Clients with a single mouse click.

New and Improved Features

Retrospect 6.0 includes several new and improved features:

Open File Backup protects in-use files on local and client volumes on computers running Windows NT/2000/XP (see Retrospect Add-ons below).

Disk Backup Sets allow Retrospect to fully leverage local and network-accessible disk resources as backup containers. Backups may span across multiple disks and even share disk space with other applications.

CD-RW Drive Configurator is a new capability that allows Retrospect to use some CD-RW drives that have not yet been qualified by DantzLab. (Only Dantz-qualified drives are officially supported by Dantz Technical Support.)

UNIX/Linux Clients are now supported by Retrospect Multi Server. Red Hat Linux (x86), Solaris (Sun SPARC), and SunOS (Sun SPARC) clients are included.

Outlook Agent will automatically close and re-launch Microsoft Outlook around backup activities, ensuring that critical Outlook address books and email databases are protected.

Disaster Recovery has been improved to shorten restore times significantly and better support hardware that requires special low-level device drivers (see Retrospect Add-ons below).

Reports Watcher, Retrospect’s HTML-based report consolidation tool, has been improved to include Operations Log data.

Retrospect Add-ons

The following options are available as add-ons to Retrospect Single Server and Retrospect Multi Server:

Open File Backup

The multi-volume Open File Backup add-on allows files to be backed up even if they are opened and being used. This is important to ensure proper backup of line-of-business application servers which are up and running 24 hours a day such as Exchange, SQL Server™, customer relationship management applications, and accounting packages. For desktop and notebook computers, files containing email messages or calendar appointments can be backed up while they are in use.

Proactive Client Backup

Retrospect’s Proactive Client Backup add-on (formerly known as Backup Server) ensures that no computers get starved from being backed up, even if the time required to do the backups exceeds the time allotted to do the backups. This is especially important when client machines such as desktops and notebooks are being backed up. Proactive Client Backup keeps track of which machines it has backed up, so it can resume backups efficiently during the next scheduled backup session, and adjusts priorities based on defined objectives to ensure no computers get starved from being backed up. Notebooks are automatically detected and backed up when they are connected to the network.

Disaster Recovery

With the Disaster Recovery add-on, Retrospect can easily create a disaster recovery CD for the backup server. While other vendors require that the disaster recovery CD be created when the computer is alive, Dantz Retrospect can create a disaster recovery CD for a computer that is already dead. Retrospect gathers the data required as a normal part of backing up the computer. The disaster recovery process installs the operating system, restores system settings, and finally restores the computer's entire hard drive to any point-in-time. Systems with RAID controllers, which require low-level device drivers, are also supported.

Retrospect Exchange Agent

Provides incremental backups of Exchange 5.5 and Exchange 2000 servers while they are running. The Exchange Agent can be configured to perform a full copy on a particular day of the week or every day.

Additional Information Available

For more information, pricing, or where to purchase an upgrade to Retrospect 6.0, please go to http://www.dantz.com/products/ or call 800.225.4880.

The Multi-Server version can backup other server's as clients. The Single Server edition is designed to backup only the local server.
