ssevenup
Has anyone found any tape libraries in the $4,000.00 range that support cleaning cartridges in any useful way? We have Overland Data libraries now, and they allow you to "reserve" slots for cleaners. The trouble is that since the library manages the cleanings, there is no way to monitor how many cleanings are left. Also, Retrospect has a tendancy to assume a cleaning cycle means the tape in use when the cycle happened is bad, so it won't append it. I am hoping Dantz will eventually go the way the hardware manufacturers seem to want. Exabyte says their library supports a reserved slot only if the host application manages it (Autopak-7). In other words they don't actually support anything but some limited SCSI message passing to inform the host when a cleaning is "suggested" or "required". The Overland unit apparently has only one message type for both errors and cleanings, hence the problem with tapes being marked bad. --MM
