There is no comprehensive list available of characters known to cause the problem. Retrospect on the Macintosh converts file names from their OSX Unicode strings to C and Pascal strings internally to preserve backwards compatibility. Some Unicode characters, however, cannot be converted, and thus Retrospect reports error -37 or error -43, and cannot back these files up.

If you have isolated the problem to a single folder, try copying half the files to a new folder and scan the new folder - does the problem occur? If not, copy half of the remaining files in the original folder to a new folder and scan. This is essentially the same as Extensions troubleshooting in OS 9. Keep dividing until there is only 1 candidate left.
