Dear All;

Here is a copy of my backup log when I do an automated backup of 2 network volumes with Professional 6.0 on Win2k NTFS workstation logged in as far as I know as administrator. It's not administrator per say, but the user has administartor rights. In fact if I pull up the groups the person belongs to it's just administrator.

Yet when i do an instant backup I get in just fine. I stopped it because people were working oon the network at the time. This is a very annoying problem because I have to wait a day each time to see results and people are starting to put pressure on me to get it working.

Dear All;

From what I've read is this a correct assumption? That during automated mode Retrospec uses it's own userid to backup the system? To correct my problem I should change that to the userid the the software was installed under?

Because it was installed under a userid belonging to the group administrators, the backup script was created under the same id, and ran in automated mode under the same id. This id has permissions to read and write to those volumes.

I hope it's as simple as that. If my thinking is wrong or correct I still want people to respond either way just to be sure.

PS These are Netware volumes by the way. They are mapped as network drives. I'm using the Netware client 4.83sp1 for Win2k. Retrospec sees them just fine as shown by the fact that Im able to backup in instant mode.

PSS Another note, the login for the netware system is different that the login for the windows system. In otherwords to login to the Win2k workstation you have userid bsmith, password and that same person on the netware system will be a different userid usually just the first name of the person brian and no password. I didn't set this system up this way. They had a secratray doing MSI for the longest time and it's just the way it is and they want as few changes as possible. People wonder why hackers have such an easy time breaking in, this is why. I hope I've already answered my question as far as the the launcher using it's own id. Please respond anyway.

Retrospect is permissions based. If the application auto-launches, it is confined to the permissions allowed by Windows. You will need to set Retrospect to launch with permissions that grant access to your network shares. You may need to configure the Retrospect Launcher Service to automatically log into the shared volume using a non-"system" account for proper login to the shared network volume as follows:

Windows NT 4.0

1. Open the Services Control Panel.

2. Select Retrospect Launcher, stop the service and then click the Startup button.

3. In the “Log On As” section select This Account. LocalSystem will appear in the field to the right.

4. Change “LocalSystem” to the account you want to use and then enter your password in the two password fields. (This allows automatic backup while logged in as the specified account, or while logged out.)

5. Restart the Launcher Service.

Windows 2000/XP

1. Open the Services Control Panel under Administrative Tools.

2. Select Retrospect Launcher, stop the service and then click the Startup button.

3. In the “Log On As” section select This Account. LocalSystem will appear in the field to the right.

4. Change “LocalSystem” to the account you want to use and then enter your password in the two password fields.

5. Restart the Launcher Service.
