-53 error & Macintosh Manager

I'm getting an error -53 and the message that "that the volume is off line (i.e. that the volume cannot be found)." A retropect online document cites the problem as an OS X bug in which the volume creation date is null or empty, but I see a creation date of 1969 on the server HD. My guess is that the formatting utility I used from Apple is bad...giving this bogus file creation date. Still why cannot Retrospect handle this date?

 

 

 

Also, any suggestions beyond a full backup, reformat, and the full restore. I have this situation on three servers. Not only does backup abort it also caused Macintosh Manager (on 10.1.4 Server) to go deaf.
