TomHorsley
Just upgraded 5.6 to 6.0 on Windows XP SP1. I created a nice new backup set and am saving everything on the system to CD-R. I got 40 errors on the C: partition telling me that a slew of c:\windows\inf\*.pnf files were modified between the backup and verify portions of the process. There is nothing running on this system but retrospect and those few services the XP won't let me stop. Nothing ever modified .pnf files when I was using 5.6. What the heck is this about? (I see a lot of the files are for devices that are probably being used by retrospect with names like scsi.pnf, etc).
AmyJ
What backup device are you using? While in Retrospect, go to Configure > Devices > Environment and list Vendor, Product and Version. The error indicates that the files are in use and changing during backup, although it isn't Retrospect specifically that is modifying or using them. Try turning off Windows XP System Restore (found in the My Computer properties box) - does the problem go away?
TomHorsley
Its a Plextor external SCSI CD-RW drive, but I think that's unimportant. I've developed a theory :-). I suspect this backup was the very first time I used the CD-RW drive following the install of XP SP1, and XP is the one generating the updated .pnf files the first time the device associated with the corresponding inf file is used. I'll see if I get any new errors the next time I do a backup, or if (as I suspect) this is a one-time thing.
