Good day, everybody,

A user started to receive the following errors in the log:

- 2/14/2010 7:24:57 PM: Copying Local Disk (C:)

MapError: unknown Windows error -1,020

xpmlStoreMetadata: couldn't copy file "\\?\GLOBALROOT\Device\HarddiskVolumeShadowCopy1\Documents and Settings\LocalService\NTUser.Dat" to the state folder "C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Retrospect\RtrExec.dir\Exec\State\MetaInfo\writer0000\comp0000\file0001", winerr -1020, error -1001

xpmlStoreMetadata: couldn't copy file "\\?\GLOBALROOT\Device\HarddiskVolumeShadowCopy1\Documents and Settings\NetworkService\NTUser.Dat" to the state folder "C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Retrospect\RtrExec.dir\Exec\State\MetaInfo\writer0000\comp0000\file0003", winerr -1020, error -1001

MapError: unknown Windows error -1,020

xpmlStoreMetadata: couldn't copy file "\\?\GLOBALROOT\Device\HarddiskVolumeShadowCopy1\Documents and Settings\NetworkService\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Windows\UsrClass.Dat" to the state folder "C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Retrospect\RtrExec.dir\Exec\State\MetaInfo\writer0000\comp0000\file0004", winerr -1020, error -1001

Also, according to the user,

C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Retrospect\RtrExec.dir\Exec\State\MetaInfo\writer0000\comp0000 does not exist on the backed-up disk.

He runs Retrospect on the following configuration:

1. OS version: XP-64 sp2, all (or at least, most updates to date);

2. Retrospect version: 7.5.14

3. Disk backup to USB-connected HD

4. File system on both victims is NTFS.

Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

Robin, thanks for the reply!

The user run an upgrade to 7.6.123, but it didn't solve the problem. In the script, the folder names matching administrator or administrator.machinename are excluded, to make sure that this is not a privilege issues.

Volume ShadowCopy service is running, it doesn't report errors in the event logs.

Backup runs under local user account, which has admin priviledges

xpmlStoreMetadata: couldn't copy file "\\?\GLOBALROOT\Device\" etc.

One of the concerns is that UsrClass.Dat and NTUSER.DAT are not backed up, returning the same "winerr -1020, error -1001". As far as I understand, the meaning of it that the registry is not backed up properly, if at all.

Your help is greatly appreciated. My affection w/Retrospect, in all its incarnations, even including Express, still strong after 15 years %^)
