Backing up OS9 client fails

Recommended Posts

I am running R8 backing several OSX clients, which works quite nicely. However, I also need to backup OS9 client, and that fails miserably. The Quick Start guide states that backing up Classic Mac OS is supported, but provides no further details that I can see. The remote computer has Retro Client 5.1.157 installed and shows as source, although no volumes are reported. During defining the source, I was asked for password. Retro Client for OS9 has no option to enter passwort, so presumably it is empty. When running backup script, I get the following log:

OS 9 clients are not supported.

From the Read me in the client support section:

PowerPC G3, G4, or G5, or any Intel processor

Mac OS X or Mac OS X Server 10.3.9, 10.4.11, or 10.5.5 or later

RAM that meets Apple's guidelines for each OS

Note: Backing up Mac OS X Server clients requires Retrospect Multi Server or Retrospect Single Server with available Server Client Licenses.

Hmm, on page 14 in "Retrospect 8 Getting Started.pdf," one can read the following:

On each machine on the network you want to back up with Retrospect, you must

install the Retrospect Client software. There are Retrospect Client installers for

Mac OS X, Classic Mac OS, Windows, and Linux.

(Emphasis added by me.)

If the above is not true and I can't really backup OS9 clients with R8, then is it possible to run R6 in parallel to R8 on the same computer to backup Mac OS Classic clients?

Yes. Backup Sets are not interchangeable with Media Sets, but a machine running either (or both) the Retrospect 8 engine and/or Retrospect 8 console application can also run Retrospect 6.1 without issue.

WTF?!

We just bought an update of Retrospect because of the DiskToDiskToTape feature AND because like robek we read of the Mac Os Classic clients in the getting started guide.

I feel deceived...

I am sorry you feel that way. We have never tried to hide the system requirements. We always post the Read Me and other documentation for everyone to see prior to purchase.

You may want to edit the passage where it says "available installers for Classic Mac OS" from the getting started guide for Retrospect 8.

As for us, we'll have to redesign our future Backup strategy...

Maybe someone has been there and can give a little advice?

We are trying to backup the MacOS 9 clients sharing the complete hard disk and adding the Desktop and the Documents folder as favourites.

Adding these shares to Retrospect 8 seems to work fine, but the log is full (hundreds) of this errors:

MapError: unknown Mac error: -8783

and a couple of :

MapError: unknown Mac error: 63

I have no clue if the backup is not working for certain files, what's wrong?

Any other way of backing up MacOS clients?

Thanks a lot!

Perhaps it's not productive to know why it doesn't work. Perhaps you should focus your attention on a workaround.

No offence, but for help you need to provide more information. Like what your backup structure is and what you need to back up. Users of this forum don't read minds and have no clue what your resources are.

If you expect fellow forum users to put effort into something you can use you should at least put some effort into explaining your problem in detail. That way other users with a similar problem might also benefit.

Sorry, I was trying to keep it short so nobody would mind reading it.

We have about 80 computers at the office which are backed up at a daily basis. About 30 of them are old PPC G4s with MacOS9 (I know, but only the REAL OS9 works for us).

Since we want to use a Disk2Disk2Tape backup procedure we decided to try sharing the complete Hard Drive of the OS9 systems (It has to be the whole drive, since the Desktop has to be backed up as well and it's a hidden system folder)

We add the Clients to Retrospect 8 as a network share, only the Desktop and a folder with the user's files are selected as favourites and in the script.

This is an exctract of the log:

Thanks a lot.

I must agree with rhwalker (Russ), Retrospect 6 is your best option. What you are experiencing is very likely incompatibility.

OS9 has been succeeded by OSX since 24 march 2001, so we are talking about eight years, which is a long time for the computer industry. I don't think it's realistic to expect programs to support their legacy that long (I'm not going into the (in)ability of reading old Backup Sets, that's something different).

Unless anybody comes up with a solution for your specific problem (which I doubt, but I've been proven wrong before) you shouldn't expect a solution in the form of an update. You rather need to think if you really need the old OS9 and if it wouldn't be a good idea to upgrade your application by now. If you really can't do without OS9, your option is to get yourself Retrospect 6 and run that separate of Retrospect 8.

How about running retrospect 6 to copy or backup OS9 files to a server and then use retrospect 8, running concurrently on the server to backup them up from there to tape or wherever?
