qsstefan
Just a quick question: We have a multi-server license of Retrospect 6.5.319. and a IBM Ultrium-TD3 LTO tape drive. We've been having problems with Retrospect crashing or simply not wanting to write all of our files to tape, so we tried a different software - BackupExec. Apparently this installed a driver for the tape drive, and now after having spoken with a tech at Retrospect, we want to give Retrospect another chance and start clean. So we deleted all of the config files and these were recreated. We were told this would most likely take care of the 625 error messages when writing to tape, as well as the application crashing. The problem is now Retrospect does not recognize the tape drive anymore. We tried uninstlaling and re-installing. All of the configuration stays in place though ... all of the clients setup, as well as the scripts are still there after a uninstall/re-install. Any suggestions how we could get the tape drive driver back so we can reuse the tape drive again? Thanks much NOTE: OS: 2003 Server Enterprise SP2
Mayoff
Did you remove the Backup Exec drivers?
qsstefan
We ran the installer for the Backup Exec and unchecked the "tape drivers" checkbox - hoping this will remove those. The Backup Exec software continues to see the drive just fine (and reads from it just fine). Retrospect continues to see the drive as "reserved". Isn't there a driver that Retrospect can install to "overwrite" the Backup Exec driver, the way Backup Exec driver overwrote the Restropect when this was working? Short of completely removing Backup Exec software completely (which may not even re-enable the drivers for Retrospect) is there another way to force the Retrospect tape drivers to take precedence over the BackupExec drivers? Thank you much
Mayoff
Retrospect does not load tape drivers into your system. Retrospect loads the tape driver when you launch Retrospect itself, so that we don't cause conflicts with other software or your system. But, other software can load a driver before we get a chance. qsstefan
Thank you for the prompt reply. Based on what you said in your last comment, do you think that the only option is to completely remove BackupExec from the system? Also do you think that this will re-enable the drivers for the Retrospect software? We closed Backup Exec and restarted Restrospect only and it is still not able to read the tape drive - only reading as status "reserved". Any suggestion would be welcome. Thank you much. qsstefan
Could we have a follow-up on this conversation please? We're wondering if you think we have to completely uninstall the other software for the tape drive to be recognized by Retrospect. With the other software closed and the tape drivers not installed, wouldn't you think that Retrospect should load its own drivers and be able to access the tape drive just fine? Please let us know your thoughts.
Mayoff
Removing backup exec is a good place to start. "closing" other software doesn't help, since they load the drivers into the registry/system.
