IMF
Hello, I have been using Multi Server Edition for maybe a year or so and I am now wanting to be able to rotate out my external backup drives each month. The problem that I am having is that when I switch the drive, the backup won't resume where it left off last month. I need to tell each script where to backup to each time I switch the drives. I am guessing there is a better way to do this?
Mayoff
You need to make sure you have a different backup set for each destination disk. You then need to setup the backup script to use that specific destination on the days you want to change disks.
IMF
Ah so I would have to have double the scripts and just schedule them only while the correct disk will be attached it sounds like?
Mayoff
Basically yes. Or you can have one script with 2 destinations.
IMF
If I did that would retrospect be able to recognize which drive was attached at the time and backup to it?
Mayoff
When you schedule a backup to a specific backup set on a specific day, the corresponding backup disk must be attached for the backup to work.
IMF
Sounds like it may be a solution for me. Now my question is if I reconnect the drive with month old backups, will the incremental backups be able to pick up where they left off? Or would I have to start fresh with a full backup? Mayoff
Normal will copy only new or changed files since the disk was last used.
IMF
Sounds good, thanks. I am thinking this should work, but i'll post back if I get caught on any snags.
