JEtkins
I've recently rebuilt my PC with Vista Ultimate 64-bit, and I'm having a few problems with Retrospect. The first was that it wasn't auto-launching at all; that one went away when I disabled UAC. However, one other problem remains: a -1017 error when my scheduled daily backup first runs after a reboot. Here's the log extract: + Retrospect version 7.6.111 Automatically launched at 9/24/2008 6:00 AM in user account Vista\jetkins + Driver Update and Hot Fix, version 7.6.1.101 + Normal backup using Daily backup at 9/24/2008 6:00 AM To Backup Set Backup Set A... - 9/24/2008 6:00:20 AM: Copying System (C:) Can't save Snapshot file, error -1017 (insufficient permissions) 9/24/2008 6:10:37 AM: Execution incomplete Completed: 1033 files, 832.7 MB, with 55% compression Performance: 344.5 MB/minute Duration: 00:10:11 (00:03:26 idle/loading/preparing) Exit at 9/24/2008 6:11 AM It's backing up to a network share, and the backup itself appears to go fine, but the snapshot creation fails. The account it's using is my Administrator-level account. If I open Retrospect, add a one-time re-run of the failed backup, and then close Retrospect, then the re-run and all subsequent scheduled backups run perfectly - until the next reboot, when they'll start failing again. Mayoff
What disk is the catalog file saved onto?
JEtkins
The catalog in on my local C: drive, in that account's Documents folder. FYI, I have two identically-configured backup sets, with the script alternating between them on a weekly basis, and the error occurs regardless of which is the current set. Mayoff
Does Retrospect run under a specific user account in the preferences or as the currently logged in user.
JEtkins
Sorry, I thought I mentioned that in my original post. It's set to run explicitly under my account.
Mayoff
Does that mean you are using the default "currently logged in user" or did you specify your user account?
JEtkins
OK, apparently I'm not using the right words. No, it is not set to "currently logged-in user" - the account is set manually.
Mayoff
Try changing to Run as the currently logged in user and see if you have better luck. Make sure the folder containing your catalog file grants the system account full control over the folder and the contents.
JEtkins
I'll give it a try, but won't that create problems accessing the network share that I'm backing up to?
JEtkins
Well that went well...not! As I suspected, the auto-launched task is not able to access the backup set on the network share, so I've now got a background process running, emailing me that it's waiting for media, and no way to connect to it to stop it. When I try to open Retrospect, I instead get a blank Retrospect Monitor window (another problem which is the subject of another thread already), so it appears that my only option is to attempt to kill the running process, or reboot. Past experience tells me that either of those actions will result in a corrupted catalog file, so I'll then have to manually recreate that as well. Much as I like Retrospect, I'm beginning to have some serious doubts about its readiness for Vista, which is very disappointing considering how long both products have been around now. JEtkins
OK, I need to eat some humble pie - it failed appears that the failure was due to it being unable to groom sufficient free space out of the backup set, not because it could not access the set. I do have a stored ID/password for the network share, so perhaps it will be able to access it regardless. I'll try again over the weekend. It would have been nice to be able to see what was going on at the time if the Retrospect Monitor window was working properly, though. JEtkins
OK, I set it to run as the logged-in user, but got exactly the same 1017 error when trying to save the Snapshot file. The catalogs folder - and the catalog files themselves - have Full Control permissions for both my user account and SYSTEM. JEtkins
Any other ideas, or clues when this might be resolved? I'm still seeing -1017 failures on the first automated run after a reboot.
