vtrasikis
Hi, I started to have the 1017 error also and followed all of your suggestions. The backups seem to work okay, but at the very end, it gives that 1017 error. Question about the "specified user" my PC doesn't have a password and I don't have a domain name, so I have left the password field blank, but what would I put in the log on to: field?? Even though it does state that I can use the "local computer name" it doesn't work and when the application starts, it reverts back to local user. I did try the
Mayoff
In a workgroup environment you type the local computer name in the Logon to field. Make sure you type the name exactly as it shows in My Computer properties.
vtrasikis
Hi Robin, Well, I tried what you suggested and it seems like I am just doing something wrong. I am enclosing screen shots from the my computer and from the security screen. Thanks for all of your help! Greatly appreciated! Mayoff
Logon to should be the computer name not the workgroup name.

Mayoff
Does the Windows Event log show a failed login attempt? Are you creating an account with no password or does it have a password? What are you trying to backup when you get the -1017 error?
vtrasikis
Hi Robin. Nope didn't see any errors in the event log. Yes, I am creating an account with no password.

vtrasikis
Robin, I did set up an account with a password and Retrospect accepted it. When the backup ran, it still produced the 1017 error at the end....Could it be anything else???
Mayoff
What is the exact error displayed in the log?

vtrasikis
One addition. The schedule still runs that backup and still is getting the error and the backups seem to be okay. Could that really be true???
Mayoff
The data did get copied but writing to the catalog may have failed. This sounds like a problem with the catalog file or permissions writing to the catalog file. What disk are you using to store your backup set catalog file? vtrasikis
Hello... I believe that it is the NAS drive...
Mayoff
Copy the catalog file to your C drive. Double Click the catalog file to point Retrospect to the new location and try again. We don't recommend saving the catalog to the NAS if you can avoid it
vtrasikis
Hi Robin. I did as you requested and no more 1017 errors. Question, why not have the catalog file on the NAS??? If you had to restore the complete drive, wouldn't it be faster when the catalog is there??? Now, you would have to rebuild the catalog first and then do a restore..... Rather a waste of time.... Thanks for all of your help!
Mayoff
why not have the catalog file on the NAS? I think your example is explanation enough....
susanrs
Is there a set of best practices for using Retrospect with a NAS (I have the ReadyNAS NV+)? I am getting a number of "can't read" errors when trying to back up encrypted folders/files to the NAS and am wondering if there are some known best practices that might solve the problem.
