hplate
Retrospect 7.5.508 (7.5.14.102) / USB2 WinXP SP2 Sony DRX-830UL-T DVD/CD RW (1.57) I have been limping along w/ a pair of these drives for some time. Now I have about had it. Why? Extremely sloooooow performance; when writing files, Retrospect logs only ~10Mb/min. Whenever I "restart" a fileset, it can take me several days to backup only 10Gb of data. Yes, I said "days" :-( And, even it is successul writing the files, Retrospect starts to take down, or lock up, other applications cuz of file locking issues (I believe?). Moreover, I have found that at the end of each volume, Retrospect will completely hang up when "Closing" a particular DVD. I have been forced to do a restart of WinXP in each case. In fact, this last fileset took me almost 3 days, and 4 restarts, to get the point where incremantals can proceed "normally". So what do I do? When we got the drives, I was disappointed to find no support for this model. But I was successful in configuring the drive via the "How to Auto Configure a CD-RW Device". So I went limping forward, ultimately discovering this performance issue. I emailed support about the issue (no response). So my questions: 1) Is there anything that I can do to improve DVD performance? Replacing the drives is a possibility, but with what? 2) what is happening when Retrospect locks up when "Closing" (Activity Monitor)? Is there a proper way to bring it down "gracefully"? Terminating the task has been unsuccessful (via the Windows Task Manager). Comments? Ideas? -harry
Mayoff
What type of media are yo using? DVD+R will give you the best speed.
hplate
Ok, we have been using Sony DVD-R ... Are you saying that DVD+R (had to go look that up) will get me back to the 120Mb/min read performance for writing? Will the lockups go away as well? (I'm talking about getting stuck in the "Closing" phase at the end of each DVD). Thanks! -harry

Are you saying that DVD+R (had to go look that up) will get me back to the 120Mb/min read performance for writing? At least DVD+R is much faster than DVD-R. I can't say how much, though.
