wineshop
Good morning, I have been using Retrospect Express HD 2.0.214 for backup purposes on my Vista Ultimate pc for several months and everything was fine. After the last Windows Update on April 9th, every time I run Retrospect, at the beginning of the process, I get a message from Vista stating that a program is trying to show a message on Vista Desktop. If I click on “show message†Retrospect crashes showing an error message where it suggests to look at the file assert_log.utx for details. Where do I find this file?? How can I fix the problem? Thanks for your help Andrea Italy
Mayoff
Assert errors could be caused by a corrupt backup catalog or damage preferences. You could try deleting the .rbc file from the backup disk. Retrospect will then rebuild this file from the backup data.
wineshop
Thanks, where do I find the .rbc file?? I looked inside the Lacie disk but I didn't find it As a matter of fact I found the assert_log.utx file but I am not able to open it. thanks for your help Andrea Italy
Mayoff
.rbc is in the Restore Points folder on the backup disk. Make sure to show file extensions on your computer.
wineshop
I found the Restore Points folder but the only files there are: rdb_del (text) execinfo (dat) a lot of rdb files (most recent April 9th!) unfortunately no .rbc Andrea Italy
Mayoff
That could be part of the problem, it may have gotten corrupted. When you launch the HD interface, does it say "0 restore points" or does it give you a total number? When no catalog exists, you should see "backup maintenance in progress" after launching the software. Make sure you do a computer restart, if you haven't done one. wineshop
Buongiorno Robin, I followed your instruction: exit HD deleted the file launched HD waited several hours for maintenance to complete (now HD shows 36 restore points) but unfortunately when I run the backup I got exactly the same problem! I believe it depends from the last Vista updates since before everything worked fine. thanks again for your help Andrea Italy
Mayoff
You may need to delete the Retrospect Express or Retroexp folder from program data. That may contain corrupt Retrospect preferences. You would need to relaunch and retype your license code after deleting the folder.
wineshop
Hi Robin, I did what you suggested exit HD cancelled Retroexp folder relaunched HD (as a matter of fact I did not need to retype license code) but unfortunately when I run the backup I got exactly the SAME problem! please help me Andrea Italy
Mayoff
If it didn't ask for a license code, then you may not have deleted the active preferences folder. Did you need to go through all the steps in the setup wizard? This would also be a sign that the preferences got deleted.
wineshop
Yes, I had to go through all the steps in the setup wizard, but the license code was already inside thanks for your help Andrea Italy

I didn't cancell the restrospect folders after unistalling HD, infact HD showed 40 restore points before starting backup, do I have to cancell them after unistalling?? thanks for your help Andrea Italy
wineshop
P.S. apparently the first message I get from Vista (a program is trying to show a message on Vista Desktop) says that HD is not fully compatible with Vista ...
Mayoff
2.0.214 is fully compatible with Vista. Are you sure you reinstalled the correct version?
eppinizer
What was the update that made the sudden change? Did it have something to do with .Net framework? Its also possible that it wasn't the update but the restarting of your computer after the update that created the problem. When was the last time before the update that the computer was restarted? -jeff
wineshop
Robin, that is the version I installed Jeff, I don't know exactly ... Andrea Italy
wineshop
Jeff, I think, but I am not sure, the update .Net framework was installed before the problem happened Andrea Italy
