Mayoff
This is a Microsoft VDI error 1060 and not a Retrospect error. Do you get any errors in the Retrospect operations log? What version of Retrospect are you using? What version of SQL? Is the SQL Server a client or local to the backup server?
allisong
I am using Retrospect 7.5.508 with 7.5.13.100 hotfixes. I am using SQL server 2005 standard. The SQL server is on the same machine as Retrospect and is being backed up to tape locally. The messages I get are: Event Type: Error Event Source: SQLVDI Event Category: None Event ID: 1 Date: 24/04/2008 Time: 12:07:20 User: N/A Computer: Description: SQLVDI: Loc=IdentifySQLServer. Desc=MSSQL$. ErrorCode=(1060)The specified service does not exist as an installed service. . Process=7484. Thread=5212. Client. Instance=. VD=. For more information, see Help and Support Center at http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp.'>http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp. Then I get: Event Type: Information Event Source: MSSQLSERVER Event Category: (6) Event ID: 18264 Date: 24/04/2008 Time: 12:07:36 User: Computer: Description: Database backed up. Database: master, creation date(time): 2008/04/22(20:01:41), pages dumped: 387, first LSN: 235:272:50, last LSN: 235:304:1, number of dump devices: 1, device information: (FILE=1, TYPE=VIRTUAL_DEVICE: {'dantz_retrospect_vd_master'}). This is an informational message only. No user action is required. For more information, see Help and Support Center at http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp. So this suggests it backups ok but that Retrospect causes the error by querying something via SQLVDI wrongly, so I don't think Retrospect can be blameless as this does not happen with other backup packages!!! Mayoff
What does the Retrospect operations log report? Is Retrospect getting a specific error? In the case of the 2nd message, it clearly says "This is an informational message only. No user action is required."
Mayoff
Our engineers have reproduced the problem with errors being displayed in the event logs and we have logged a bug for it.

drugh
Any progress on this issue?? We are experiencing the same problem...
CCC
We are also having this problem. After spending a week trying to get SQL backup working it is really annoying to have to deal with possibly bogus application log errors daily. Does this error mean there is a problem with my SQL backups or is it a benign error?
Mayoff
We have fixed a cosmetic bug that can cause the Event logs to display some bogus data. The fix will be released in a week or two.
