Exchange Mailbox Backup Issue

stig

Recommended Posts

Exchange 2003 sp2 and Retrospect 7.0.

I tried to backup one Mailbox from Exchange Server A, and restore it to another Exchange Server B. I see that most of messages are restored in the new Mailbox on the Server B, but, Calendar and Task are not. There are only empty folders for calendar and task, and most importantly, the recovered emails are incomplete. For messages with multiple domain recipients, it will not be backed up. With no Calendar/Task and incomplete emails, this backup is meaningless. I mush have missed something. Anyone can show to how to backup mailbox correctly? Thanks!

Restoring Exchange data to a different exchange server isn't really supported. Each exchange server has it's own set of permissions and account info, and as a result the restored messages may not look like they do when restored back to the original exchange server.

This is an exchange limitation. Retrospect is a backup and recovery tool but not an exchange data migration tool.

In that case, the mailbox backup does not do what it is supposed to do. Won't it be nice if Retrospect can create a .pst file for each mailbox? I know when you restore pst file back to exchange server via outlook, something is not exactly same, but at least user will not lose any data for messages, calendar, tasks.

Maybe I am wrong, but I don't think any product can backup a mailbox directly from the exchange server and restore the data into a .pst file instead of back onto the same exchange server that mailbox came from.

The Mailbox backup option didn't copy the data from a PST file originally, it copied it from the first storage group.
