IrenaS
You need to remove the previous version as detailed in the Readme file: un-installing the Preview Client To un-install the client, first move the folder "Dantz Beta" to the trash. When installed, the Retrospect client creates the folder: /Library/StartupItems/RetroClient and puts the following two files inside: RetroClient StartupParamaters.plist To remove them, you can drag the RetroClient folder to the trash, but you will not be able to empty them from the trash until after you restart your Macintosh. To empty the trash without restarting you will need to manually quit the "pitond" process: Step 1 - Open the Terminal application found in /Applications/Utilities/. Users who are familiar with typing in the UNIX shell may choose to perform these actions as the 'root' user and omit the 'sudo' in each of the commands below. Please enter Terminal commands carefully and accurately; there are no system warnings when removing files and folders through the command line interface. Step 2 - Type: sudo ps -cx | grep pitond Enter your user password at the "password" prompt (you must be logged in as a user with administrator privileges). If the Retrospect client process is running you will see something similar to this: 119 ?? Ss 0:03.63 pitond The first field (119 in this example; your number will be different) is the process number. You will need to enter the process number in the next step. Step 3 - Now kill the process by typing: sudo kill [process number] (Do not type the brackets around the process number) Re-enter your administrator password if requested Step 4 -The following files contain client state information. They do not need to be removed if you plan on either reinstalling the client or upgrading the client (note: the client password resides in the retroclient.state file). Should you wish to remove them, type the following commands: sudo rm /var/log/retroclient.history sudo rm /var/log/retroclient.log sudo rm /var/root/Library/Preferences/retroclient.state Irena Solomon Dantz Tech Support
paulgreen
Hi Irena, Thank you for your post. I tried everything you suggested --- the same problem. I used Terminal to kill the process, removed all Retrospect files, emptied trash, restarted, re-installed, repeated all the above, re-installed after logging in as root ---- all to no avail. I had no problems on another machine running OS X (and none on those running OS 9 or Windows). I'm getting a little frustrated with the error 501. Any more ideas/solutions would be *most* welcome. Thank you!
IrenaS
What version of the client are you trying to install?
paulgreen
The client version is 5.0.
IrenaS
That's the Preview client. You need to install the client that comes with the full shipping product.
paulgreen
That is very odd, since this is installed from the disk that I just purchased (Retrospect Clients CD, created Mar 15, 2002, 8:48 PM, modified March 18, 2002 3:52 PM). It installed fine on another machine (we have a 10 user pack), and installs fine on the 'problem' machine under OS 9. The Creation date is Mar 12 2002. IrenaS
5.0.528 is the preview version. I believe the shipping version of the client is 5.0.198. Did you receive the CD from us directly? Did you ever receive a link to download software?
paulgreen
Hi Irena, As I said in my last post, this a just-purchased CD (from PCConnection). The packaging, manuals etc all claim this to be a full (non-preview version). Are you absolute sure that version 5.0.528 is a preview? It works fine on another OS X machine. What can be done about this? Thanks for your help. Paul
IrenaS
::blush:: 5.0.528 is the correct version to be installed on an OS X machine. *VERY* sorry for the confusion. And back to the problem... Is the client tunred on? Go to process viewer and check that the client process, pitond, is running. Is it? Irena
paulgreen
Thanks Irena Now we can try to solve the problem.....I think you have found the answer; I looked at the process and pitond is **not** running although the client is turned on. So it's starting to make some sense, but why is pitond not running.......? There is a process called 'Retrospect Clien' (sic), however. kennabt
I am having the same problem. Just purchased Retr 5.0 and client installed and activated fine on my iMac running X, but I get 501 error with another install on a G4 running X. IrenaS
Is this true if you restart the machine and check immediately afterwards? Or does the pitond process stop at some point? Try creating another user on that computer, logging in as that user and installing the client to limit the possibility of software conflicts. paulgreen
The pitond process is not running even immediately after startup. I've installed the client after logging in as another user (even as root) and it did not work (error 501). I just checked to see whether pitond was running when logged in as another user, and it was not.
kennabt
Additional info is that I can activate the client; (I can select the client, verify the name, and then just after typing in the password I get the error. So it appears that the client IS visible on the network. CW
paulgreen
I'm sorry that you're also having problems, but I am glad that I am not alone. I'm getting exactly what you're getting. You may want to check what Irena suggested --- is pitond running? (using Terminal, type ps -cx and look for pitond in the list). Even though the client is installed correctly, for some reason pitond is not running on my machine.
IrenaS
Check that Classic is not running. If it is, then force quit it from the Classic prefs and try to turn the client on again. Next, check your Network preferences and make sure that the port you want to use with Retrospect is listed first.
kennabt
Classic is not running. Under network preferences I have deleted all other ports except ethernet. (Which is the way that the machines are networked)
IrenaS
What happens if you try logging in as another user? Also, be sure that you have not set a speed threshold in the Retrospect application, and that your password does not contain spaces.
kennabt
I logged in as root and reinstalled it and I have removed it and reinstalled it under a new user (admin). Still to no avail. There is no speed threshold set. No Spaces.
IrenaS
Paul, have you been able to find a solution?
paulgreen
Hi Irena, Unfortunately, nothing I have tried works . I've tried all your suggestions. The key is that pitond isn't running. Any ideas on how to start the pitond process? Is it possible to get feedback from one of the software engineers on this? I really need to get this going --- any help or ideas would be much appreciated! Thanks, Paul
IrenaS
Please provide the following information and we can take a look at this: Operating system (and build) Computer Model and speed Other 3rd party processes What shows up in the Network Preferences Pane (how many active network ports, and which is listed first)? Thanks
